New Gazette Issue article on choosing a new puppy

The latest magazine issue by the AKC Gazette has a great article on how to judge a new puppy regarding its potential to be dominant or submissive, and for good measure it uses a corgi pup for illustration and was written by a corgi breeder. The article lists some tests to give to a prospective puppy and assigns a 1-5 level to the pup's reaction with 1 and 2 being dominant, 3 being neutral and 4-5 being submissive. Tests include rolling a pup on back and keeping it there for 30 secs and judging if the pup squirms (dominant potential) or has no reaction (submissive), banging a pan and observing the pup's reaction, seeing if the pup follows you, dragging a towel in front of the pup and observing its reaction, opening an umbrella in front of the pup to see how it reacts to an unexpected event, and lifting it off the ground in your hand for 30 secs observing its reaction then immediately putting it down and bringing the pup to your face and seeing if the pup licks you or nips at you. Is this article on the web? It sounds like it would be a good read.

Cardiguy,

That does sound like an interesting article to read. I looked up the site and you have to subscribe to the magazine, I don't think it is an article that is on the web?

I posted the link for anyone who wants to check it out.

I checked it out but didn't subscribe. I may go back and do that though.

Looks like you can go back and order recent single issues, so maybe this one will be available by January.
