My favourite is when I get close and ask him to give me some love. He growls quietly, then I get closer and ask for some looooove and it gets louder then I grab him in a hug and ask for a kiss and he goes nuts growling and wriggling - like he hates it! It's so funny, as the minute I stop he comes back for more! Boys! They pretend they are so tough, but they are really big sucks!

Rhys does the same thing. If he could talk, he would say "Mom! Quit it! I'm too old for that mush." But he loves it, and he knows it.

I do the same with Tuck. The look on his face is priceless. He's grinning ear to ear as he's growling. Although with the "lovins" it's not really a growl but more like a tortured moan "stop, you're killing me".

Taylor has a growl for tugs of war and toy chasing and recovery, and a growl for house protection, and a growl to tell a few other dogs that he doesn't appreciate them. His house protection growl is the funniest. It's his alternative to yelling out loud since he knows that any continuous barking at birds flying around etc, is subject to criticism. So it's a low pitched, lingering, tuneful, half-hearted growly noise.

Duchess has picked up a few ticks this fall. We didn't have any all summer. When I find a tick and she knows I am about to pull it off she growls. She used to scare me with the growl but now I know she doesn't mean it. After I pull the tick Duchess will jump on me and dance around like she is saying, aren't I a good girl? She always gets a treat for letting me do this or any other grooming chore.

I had a wonderful conformation show Pem called Ricky and he always growled very quietly when placed on the table in the ring for inspection by the judge. Otherwise he was as good as gold. So it could be he missed winning more often than he did, because a few of the judges would give him a bad mark for temperament. He never growled at a judge when inspected on the floor nor when one judge wanted to gauge the weight of the Corgis and actually lifted each one off the table including Ricky - a most unusual thing to do.

Several months ago, I tried to clip Chip's nails and he growled at me. It tickled me and I laughed and he started kissing me and we started playing. Well the second time I tried, he growled again and I laughed again. What did I do - I created a monster! I never did succeed at clipping his nails, however, my obedience trainer-who is a vet tech clipped them for me. She just ignored his growling and clipped all four paws. No more growling from Chip and now I can successfully clip his nails. She said that if I had continued this way, he would have gotten so nobody could have clipped his nails. This was my fault because I was stupid and I was teaching my beautiful little Chip a very bad habit.

Hi everyone
I did a search and found this thread... hopefully I can resurrect it back!
Peanut love to play fetch! He’ll fetch his toy ball, his stuff animals, chew toys, and anything that he can get his paws on! I’ll sit on the floor and Peanut will bring me something to throw. As soon as I throw the toy to the other side of the house, I hear Peanut bark as he’s running towards it. He’ll get the toy and trot it back to my area. 9/10 times I’ll try to go for the toy and play fetch again, but I think Peanut wants to play tug-o-war. Once I reach for the toy, Peanut grabs the other end and he tugs. He’ll play growl as we are going this. He'll keep his mouth clamped on the toy for a few mins until i can distract him and grab the toy.
Here are my questions:
-I tried the command “open” (as in open mouth so I can get the toy back), but that command doesn’t seem to work. I hear of people using “out” or
drop it” Any suggestions?
-If it better to let Peanut win at tug-o-war? Or me?
Side note: Peanut only barks and growls when we play these games. So I’m pretty sure he’s play barking and growling. Or maybe not?
