Dewey, your story is my worst nightmare!! Oh i'm so glad you caught the guy, seems to me like he was up to no good. I hear horror stories about people stealing dogs to use as bait dogs for pit bull dog fights, to sell to labs, etc. etc. it makes my blood run cold.
I rarely leave Milo unattended. The most i've done is run into a local convenience store but the car is in front of the window and I have a view at all times, and I make it quick and only do it if I really have to. If I work out in the yard and need to go back into the house, Milo goes with me. Sometimes I think i'm being a little neurotic and paranoid but after reading your story, not anymore. These things do happen.
I'm so glad your fuzzy baby is safe!

Part of my exercising Taylor during the week is to take him down to the local village, so leaving him looped to something or sitting down untied outside the shop's door, is a frequent thing. Sometimes I can't loop him where I want to because some other dog is tied there already. But it's another lifestyle decision I've made on Taylor's behalf, becaue the greatest danger, as someone pointed out, is from a passing dog that might be very unfreindly and the owner may have the dog on the wrong side of him/her as they go past Taylor.

[quote=Dillydoodle]I, personally, would never leave my dog tied up outside anywhere and I live in a relatively safe area. I trust no one! I take Dillon with me often in the car in cooler temperature months. In the warmer weather months he will stay home. If he is in the car with me and i have to stop to pick something up, if it is not optimal temperature to leave him, we go home, and i go out again another time without him.

I also do not leave Koda tied up anywhere, but it is not because I don't trust anyone. I think that is one of the problems in the US is that fact that we are all scared all the time which in my mind just breeds more problems.

Koda does not let me leave him for more than a second. If I try to tie him up outside to go into a store the second I walk away he freaks and generally makes a big scene.

Oh Dewey! That is so scary! Thank goodness you were able to rescue your boy before he was corgi-napped! I am another protective, worry-wart mommy, so I won't go more than 5 feet from Jackie if we are out in public (and our leash is 6 ft). People are always making such a big fuss over her, I am worried that someone will try to walk away with her.

I bet that made your heart skip a beat or two!!!!

I have to say that this world IS full of some creepy people. I met someone at petloss.com a year ago who lost her 4 yr old bichon- she didnt lose her dog to death, sadly she left her dog in her car for less than 5 minutes while she ran into a store to run a quick errand. Her car windows were rolled down a little bit, and someone broke into her car and stole her dog-and now she has no closure, the person was never found, her dog was never seen again...tell me that it is worth taking the risk? I would rather be safe than sorry...

What kind of freaking sick person walks off with another persons pet dog!!! It just makes me angery. To tell you the truth I probably would have ran out an punched the guy. I know its violent, but when I get a dog they are considered to be my child.

I am another who would never leave my dog tied up somewhere, because I also trust no one. I almost hate to leave them in the car and run into places...unless I can park right in front and see them.

My parents brought me up to be wary...they also trust no one. Hee.

Sure looks like the guy was trying to steal Dewey. Good move trusting your instincts, and I would think twice about tying Dewey up again when you go somewhere. There are people out there that are very opportunistic when a situation arises.

I haven't brought Dewey back with me to 7-11 since the incident. It sucks though but I rather him be stuck at home for a few minutes than to be stolen for someone to keep or sell... or worse...

That's the way to look at it, right? I mean, now that he's here - could you imagine life without Dewey?

I know I would feel terrible if something happened to one of my little pups.

I agree with you. Sometimes Milo and I are out and about and I want to stop in some where to run a quick errand but it means leaving Milo in the car alone and out of sight....it just isn't worth it.

I always try to stop and think of how many times I have seen people on TV & in the movies in similar situations, where they choose a quick convenience and take the risk of something really bad happening, and how I always say those people are being careless, and you should never do something like that . . . and then I try not to make myself a hypocrite!

It's amazing how much that helps, when you stop and say "If I was watching me do this on TV, what would I say about myself?"
