Stop... Pee... Stop... Pee... Poop... Stop... Poop?

Lately when I take Dewey out to go potty he'll pee, walk around and pee some more. He'll do this a good four or five times before he's done. He also poops in intervals. A little bit here, then a little bit over there. My question is: is this normal? I figure with the peeing he's just marking his territory but the pooping too? It's starting to be very stressful because just when I think he's done... he squats for some more.

I think puppies have less awareness of when they are "done" - thus pooping in intervals.

They generally get better as they age and can learn to hold it/go all at once during normal potty times.

No, it doesn't sound quite right. The weeing part is ok. On a walk, my Pem Taylor will wee and pretend-wee a dozen times - and sometimes more than once against the same tree. Taylor's usual pattern for pooping is to go twice in quick succession - and on the very odd occasion, there might be a third time some time later. But a dog that continuously squats to poop, may very well have a constriction or a bowel disorder or, more likely, be bound up through bones or hard food or lack of sifficient exercise. One other possibility is the opposite to 'bound up' - that is, a touch of dysentery through too much liquidy food including milk. It is probably down to his diet but there can be psychological reasons - exciteability, anxiousness etc.

Cody's normal routine in the morning is Pee first thing when he touches the grass, walk and find the perfect spot, poo, walk a bit more and then a second pee. Then inside for breakfast.

In the earlier days, he had gone poo sometimes more than once in his outings in the back yard, but I think it was due to his food he was on, which was changed shortly thereafter.

You've been given good advice here, and I would rule out any health problem, urinary tract infections, etc...(and a common indicator of this is that the dog will drag his rear end), there is also a great thread on here about food, and that can greatly affect their bathroom habits, but more likely, it's just a puppy being a puppy.

Dewey is still very young and I agree with disraeli about puppies not always having a sense they are finished and thus go more often. They are distracted very easily and may stop in mid poo to go check something out. Ruling internal parasites, which could be contributing, you might want to choose a designated spot to poo and then train him to a command to poo. Don't go further until he does his business - all of it. If he starts to poo again after leaving the spot, pick him up and return to the designated area and put him down there to finish.

Yep, that's Dewey. Some times he can't even finishing pooping before running off to sniff that same patch of grass he just sniffed two seconds ago. His potty command is "Go Potty" and it works well it's just he gets sooo distracted.

:: sigh ::

But he's just being a puppy. I can sleep easier.
