posterier hygene

Occasionally I have to do a good clean up job on Duchess's rear. She seems to get some feces dried onto the hairs around the rectum. this is hard to see until it gets built up. Is there something I should be doing on a daily basis or should I try trimming that fur?

The first question without knowing anything I would ask is are you feeding her a proper diet. My corgi has solid well formed bowel movements, and she has never had any feces around her posterior-she never gets cake and very rarely gets real junk to eat.

I give Duchess a varied diet of kibble and meat and fresh veggies. The same thing was happening before I started mixing her meals and she just had kibble. Usually her stool is fairly solid.

Maybe???? a little more fiber might help? Try adding a TBS of canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin - not the pie filling) to her meals and see if that might help.

I'm convinced that different dogs have different reactions to food as far as what they discharge at the other end.
My present Corgi and my last one had pretty identical diets and yet with Taylor I have only had to hose his bottom several times in the three years I have had him. Yet with my previous fellow, he had to be cleaned up at an average of once a fortnight. But it is good to get into a habit of checking their bottoms after they have toileted so that if any sloppy feces is present, the Corgi can be cleaned up immediately on the return home before there is any build up over a period or before anything hardens up and becomes "caked," and of course, before they are allowed back inside the house.

Thank you all for your replies. Especially that none of you made me feel like a fool for my question.

Jane,

One word for you - babywipes! <G> Seriously, they are great for cleaning bums, paws and just touch ups.

Thanks Debbie I had thought of the wipes they have for dogs but baby wipes would probably be more economical. Duchess won't let me handle her freely so it has been hard to check her each time she goes potty.

Hi, I agree with Debbie. The baby wipes are great! My Henrietta has a little "tootie" problem and i use the wipes to keep her clean. Also her rear is so thick with hair, i keep it clipped with scissors or the clippers. You may need to get someone to hold her while you do this. it does not take long, and just maybe monthly.Henrietta loves to have her tootie and around it wiped,so maybe start there then go where you need to. might work.you never know.

I appreciate the question/post...my older Empress Woo, a retired commercial breeder, has similar trouble every so often....and as it is hard for her to take care of her hygiene herself, I make certain that I have wipes with me and or a nice warm wet washcloth and clean her.....and she seems very much to appreciate it. Poor girl......it mostly happens though when I forgot to pick up the cat food bowl(why she seems to look at it as candy I will never know) I am getting trained though.

I also do keep her well trimmed up, which does help.

Blessings.....shannon

I have the same problem occausionally with my fluffy corgi, I just trim area around the exit hole really well, and keep the hind end hair short, but not too short that she doesn't have the cute "bunny butt" look!
