I may have found the reason why Ruby had diarrhia

Ruby has had diarrhea and generally loose and mucus poop for almost 3 wks. We took her to the vet and she got a shot and some medicine which kind of started to clear her up. Unfortunately she hurt her leg jumping out of the car and we had to bring her back to the vet who gave her an an anti inflamation shot and some anti inflamatory medicine. The vet said it could upset her stomach and she started back with the loose mucus poop. The vet said to stop the anti inflamatory meds if she wasn't limping and give her rice and chicken again. This really didn't help much. I had recently switched kibble from Purina healthy weight mgmt to Purina One healty weight mgmt kibble because it had better ingredients and I had gradually weaned her onto the new food. But even during the weaning process her poops were a little looser but not much and got worse as she was fully onto Purina One.

The last couple of days I decided to give her her old Purina with the corn garbage as the main filler and she is back to normal. We have always supplimented her food with chicken to make up for the corn filler and gave her daily vitamins so I am not that concerned that she isn't getting good food. But my guess is that there is something in Purina One that does not agree with her system. Could this be correct?

Have you tried the ProPlan made by Purina? I buy the chicken and rice for Chip and he likes it real well. Main ingredient is chicken. If I get him the beef, he starts with the itchies.

Haven't tried Purina Pro plan as I have stayed with weight mgmt food as Ruby is about 6 lbs overweight. Is proplan weight mgmt food?

I just looked on the website and it doesn't say anything about lite formula but you can request a 12 oz bag of the ProPlan Selects for free. I wish Chip would eat the Selects - I like the ingredients but he is strictly pro plan.

Yes, it is possible that the Purina ONE (note to everyone it's ONE in caps on One. It stands for Optimal Nutrition something, I forget what the E was for.)

Anyway, yes, it's possible that food to not agree with her. If you want a better food than dog chow (Is that what you mean by reg. Purina?) there are a lot of choices out there. ONE has several variteys, some w/beef, chicken, salmon, lamb. Maybe another main ingreient would be better?

Or there are other foods that are good foods. Where do you want to buy your food? Grocery store or some place like Petsmart. Petsmart/PetCo or a pet supply store will have better foods to choose from than the grocery store. IMO.

I recommend can recommend some if you'd like. If you'd like to contact me privately that would probably be the best way as there are some family problems I'm dealing with right now and I don't remember to read this list all the time. (IF it could be sent to the inbox like yahoo lists that would sure help!!!)

I have always had trouble with Emma's tummy - either too loose or constipated. I have tried pretty much all brands but have had the best luck with the Purina Pro Plan salmon for sensitive stomachs & I add plain pumpkin. She was also overweight but by following Glencorgi suggestions Em is now holding steady at 25 lbs.

I stayed with the Salmon Pro Plan but cut the kibble back to 1/3 cup with tablespoon scoop of pumpkin twice a day. And would add a little chopped chicken or leftover veggies or chopped apple to fill her up. After she was 25 lbs I changed her to 1/2 cup kibble & teaspoon pumpkin in A.M. and 1/3 cup kibble & tablespoon pumpkin in P.M. with a little chicken or veggies with this meal.

Good luck with Ruby

I have switched Rupert to a salmon based weight loss dog kibble called Performatrin Ultra that is also made with natural ingredients. He's lost 8 pounds since August and I haven't changed his treats or the canned food he gets mixed in. I mix in about 1/8 of a cup of the Chicken and Rice stew natural blend of the same brand name. I did a lot of research and found this brand to be better than all of the well known high end names for fat and carb content. It's cheaper and they don't need as much - but they feel fuller. Rupert is shiny, health and trim!

It's a brand made for the Pet Value stores - I checked and they are in NJ. Check for locations at their website:

www.petvalue.com

They suggest you call the specific location to see if they have the product you want.
