My Cardi is prematurely grey by her snout - 03-16-2006, 06:18 AM

My girl is 4 and everyone who sees her thinks she is much older. I'll never forget walking out of the vet's office when she was 7 months old and someone said "How old is that dog?" and when I said 7 months the person was really taken back and said I thought that dog was a real senior. People are always surprised at her age because of the wht/grey hairs around her snout which she has always had. She is brindle colored.

There are certain Cardigan lines that do have this premature greying. I've known several.

Her father (sire?) was Winsome Will (a top cardigan in 2000) and her mom (dam I guess) was Gina's Exactly Like You- another top Cardigan in 2000/01. Her breeder was Robin Honeycut of Faeersteed. I don't know if that line rings a bell and is one of the lines you referred to. How I got her is a long story, but she was eventually deemed pet quality by another breeder who got the puppy from Faeersteed as a favor for helping to arrange the mating of 2 top Cardigans.

Cardiguy - You have no idea how loudly the bells are clanging <LOL> Robin is my sister. I know Will well and Gina is one of my favorites at Robin's. Who did you get her from?

I'm not sure about the Sisterwoods dogs, the ones behind Will, it is possible there are some dogs in common to another fellow that used to be around here. Gina has NZ dogs behind her on the sire side and of the relatives I know of them (one lives with me) there I don't know of any premature greying in them. If I am remembering her dam's side correctly then that might pull in some common ancestors from Will's side and that could be where it popped up from??

Small world and the Cardi world is even smaller. <VBG>

I got her from Vince and Cindi Savioli from NJ in Dec of 01. They had a litter of 9 wk old Cardigans and my wife and I went there to pick one out. Cindi then brings out this 19 wk old Cardi that she said she had travelled to No. Carolina to get but she says it is pet quality and it is up for adoption. When she said it was 90% house trained, and the pup actually came over when we called and wanted to have her belly rubbed it became a no brainer. Interestingly Cindi said at one point, she hoped she wasn't making a big mistake about her being pet quality. To my untrained eye she has the big chest hanging down below her properly bowed in legs and looks like she has the proper other proportions. I send Cindi pictures of her from time to time and really need to get her feedback. (She may be eating her heart out)

Several months later I called Robin to see if she had any pictures of my dog when it was a puppy and Robin sent me several pictures including one which she said was one of the cutest pictures she has-my Ruby as a small pup in a tree! I was having some problems with Ruby regarding her being very aggression on leash and I also asked Robin about the litter and she said all the puppies from that litter were "happy clowns"

What a small world!!!!

One more point-Cindi gave me pictures of Gina and Will when we got her. It is uncanny how identical Ruby is to her mom in coloration and features, especially that real slender face with the ski slope snout. My wife keeps on telling me she wanted a real homely Cardi with big ears and what she got was a real beautiful dog. Gina in person must be a real beautiful dog. If you are interested and if I can figure out how to do it send me a pm with your e mail and I will try to send you some pictures of Gina's twin.

Just curious- how is the disposition of Gina.

Debbie - you mentioned in a response to Cardiguy that Gina had NZ dogs behind her on the father's side. Could you be more precise, perhaps I know of the breeders etc in NZ.

Copperleaf, Badagri and Cambria. Other down under corgi ones I know. I had the pleasure of meeting Judith Scott-Williams, had Lesley Chalmers on my show panel when I was a show chair. Also have met some of her dogs that were imported by some local corgi friends. Robbie Roberson judged my corgi club's specialty last year and I have a friend who imported a dog from her. Sadly he passed away last fall. The quality I see of the corgis - both breeds, from NZ and Australia, <IMO> is outstanding.

Gina and her baby girl Ruby. Robin and the Saviolis (good folks, by the way <G>) co-owned Gina at the time of her breeding, so Ruby was a puppy back to them to fulfill the contract of Gina's purchase or at least I'm pretty sure that's how it went. Gina is a lovely girl, a little bit of a mind of her own, but most corgis do. It has been a while since I've been over to see everybody, so I'm going a little on memory here. Gina isn't one that loves all other dogs; she has her select pals and is better with the boys I think. She's not one that necessarily does well with other females though, which can be the way of corgi girls. I am overdue a visit, so I'll check next time I'm over and let you know.

Will's temperament is good and the NZ dogs I've met including Ruby's grandsire (Badagri's Kiwi Fanfaire - BJ) and great grandmum (Badagri's Spring Daisy) are great!

Did Ruby get better on the leash aggression thing? Sometimes it can be a phase thing that appears at certain stages of development. Nipping it and/or getting help for it as soon as possible can prevent it from becoming a long term problem.

Oh, forgot to mention; BJ aka, International, New Zealand, American, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Champion Badagri Kiwi Fanfare. Is the most titled NZ bred Cardigan.

Gina's dam Ch. Garvin's Dinah Do Shinah, if I'm not mistaken also has NZ roots as well. Gayle Garvin brought many of the NZ dogs over and you can check out some of Ruby's relatives at: <http://www.garvincorgis.com>

Unfortunately, Ruby is very aggressive on leash in a protective type of way. She actually gets into a frenzy when she sees other people or dogs and grabs the leash in her mouth and shakes it violently. If I catch it early enough, I sometimes can get her to sit and stay. Just sometimes. At home she is very aggressive to visitors she doesn't know and we are forced to gate her up when people come over. She barks like crazy in the house when she sees someone or something like a squirrel go by. She camps out at our bay window and protects the house. Other than that she is a real sweetie with us, always ready to play, she has never growled at either of us and really loves to lick us continually for minutes on end. We can hold her paws to clean them, take her food or her possesions without a sound. Greenies she can get a little possessive with though. At the dog park she is ok and at the vet's she is ok with people and dogs. We have tried 2 different trainers a few yrs ago to no avail so I think we just have to live with this protective behavior unless you have some ideas.

HI Debbie
Just a quick response for now. Lesley Chalmers is the breeder of my Taylor. Last week Lesley appeared on national TV in an investigation type doco segment concerning a woman who shows Pekes and has a tongue longer than the body length of her dogs. Lesley has been the president of the NZ Kennel Club for about six months now and the NZKC didn't handle the issues with this woman very well. So I got Taylor in front of the TV and when Lesley came on two or three times, I directed Taylor to her appearing on TV and her voice. And Taylor pricked up his ears aand looked interested along the lines he does on occasions when animals make noisy comments on TV. Taylor hasn't seen Lesley for the three years I've had him and left her kennels at age 13 weeks.

Hi Debbie
Copperleaf (not Copperfield) kennels are owned by Joy Devery who lives about 50 miles from me. She has a really lovely winning Cardi that I saw at conformation shows when I last was showing Taylor. Badagri Kennels is owned by Helen Arps, Cambrian (not Cambria) Kennels is owned by Nanette Green of South Australia and is not a Kiwi (NZ'er).

Ann Aitken has just joined my Corgi walking group and she has six Cardis at present including two puppies that she is keeping. Ann lives 30 miles away from me in a little farming place called Greytown on the other side of a mountainous hill. Ann use to have Pems only but she changed to all-Cardis because she says they get on very well together as a group. - unlike Pems and are collectively quieter.

I know Robin Robertson well. She moved some years ago to Australia - her husband is Aussie - but s
