Corgi Ears - 01-23-2007, 05:19 PM

I've been looking at a lot of pictures on the forum and also in books. It seems some Corgis look like their ears are growing out the sides of their head while others have them more closely grown. Why is that...a genetic fault??

The placement of ears can vary. The Pembroke standard says:
"A line drawn from the nose tip through the eyes to the ear tips, and across, should form an approximate equilateral triangle."

Cardigans are set a tad bit wider than a Pembrokes ears.

Also, it could be the way the dog is holding the ears at the time. Sometimes placement can look wrong when it's just the way the dog is holding them at that moment.

Emma's ears are farther apart than Chloe's. I think from Taflar's discription that of my two Girls Chloe's ears may be closer to the Pem standard - am I right Peggy?

Well, from their pictures, I'd say Emma is more correct. The skull should be "wide and flat" between the ears. The line from the ear tip to the nose (through the eye) should be as long as the line from ear tip to ear tip.

Chloe's ears look to be are a bit closer, and it appears to me she has a bit of a narrower head so if you measure they both might be pretty close to correct.

Try to visualize the equallateral triangle. Ear tip to ear tip and ear tip to nose. All three sizes should be the same length.

Dudley moves his ears so much. For the most part, they are erect on top of his head, but when he gets really really tired, his ears will stick out the side of his head--I call it his "Yoda ears."

I was just curious. that probably is the best case scenario, Peggy, about it could be the way they were holding their ears. I remember Katie's ears were ever changing. In the course of just a few minutes they could go from both flopping down to going back, straight up (well, just one) again, or one ear up and the other down. Either way, they're all precious.

OK I see what you mean... Em does have the wide flat skull and her triangle looks equal. Chloe's head is more narrow. Chloe's white blaze is asymetrical but when I hold her still and try to size her up I think her triangle is more narrow between her ears. Thanks Peggy - this is fun
