Corgi contrasts

Corgis do vary and Pems and Cardis can have reverse behaviour patterns.

Two new members have joined the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Club. Stuart has a 15 month old Cardi girl named Megs. Megs came from a three month stint as a 2-5 month old pup in a Pet shop glass cage. She is hyper. This is one Corgi that Taylor does not like. But Megs is a dear. She is just all over the place, a pocket battleship - making up for lost time. She needs some real time training. At Taylor's Christmas party - Megs gatecrashed much to the delight of everyone, and had a ball playing with every available and willing dog.

John has two pups aged 10 months - brother and sister, Roydon and Renee. Both are lovely Pem specimens though Renee could be a little too petite. Roydon is a typical Pem older puppy - and I picked him up immediately for a cuddle - but Renee is as shy as they come. There was no way that Renee was going to come near me, nor Taylor when I finally went and fetched him for an introduction. John has had both of them only two-three weeks and plans to start Good Citizen training in a couple of weeks. So it will take time for both his new Corgis to get accustomed to their new owner and environment. I suggested to John that he gives Renee a lot more individual and separate attention than Roydon and perhaps concentrate on her in the organised training sessions. Roydon is fine - anyone could train him in their living room. I think Renee needs to be separate from her brother on occasions because she is obviously 'hiding' behind his manly demeanour and thus is enclosing herself in a shell, though I would imagine that she will be less timid as the days and weeks go by. The original owner/breeder who lives far away (in Auckland), gave the Corgis to John insisting that he took them both.

Usually Cardis are a bit more laid back and watch things awhile before jumping in. The one you described is not the norm.

As for Renee, are she and her "brother" actual littermates? If so then yes, the owner needs to spend one on one time with them and do some things seperately with them. If not then they will bond to each other more than people.

Peggy - yes to everything.
I had John come and visit me to sign some papers as I am a Justice of the Peace, and I re-emphasised that he needs to give Renee a lot of space away from her litter brother. But I don't know if he is listening too carefully. Renne is getting speyed inside the next week or two. But Roydon might be used for stud duties in the future by his breeder.

You know, I think I made a big mistake with Lulu not doing more one on one. I primarily got a 2nd dog because Tucker seemed very lonely.

And, although it is getting better, Lulu clearly bonded with Tucker first. She really defers to him.

I will say that as her personality has developed, she does this less and less. It has been great with the cold weather leaving Tucker home when Lulu goes to obedience class and leaving Lulu home when Tucker goes to Agility. And Saturday Tuck had Run Thrus so Lulu stayed home. When I brought him home, Lulu and I went on our own to 3 pet stores to habe "Mommy and Me" time.

I believe I need to start doing more of this.

It's also interesting to me that Cardi Lulu did show some of the reservedness initially but she now has picked up Tucker's overly enthusiastic methods of greeting people. I swear that is a lerned behavior.

You are such a good mom Susan - spending QT with each of your kids individually.

Met a happy Pembroke Corgi today when I took my Taylor on a shoreline walk after a day doing agility competition, but I feel sad for his owner and the Corgi in question. The five year old had a mobility aid cart (imported from the USA) attached to him as he lost the use of his back legs from being runover by a car six months ago. The owner said his Corgi's life was saved by the internet because the owner had spotted carts for sale. The Corgi was all wet through having had a good walk run through the shallow part of the sea and he was happy to meet up with Taylor. With toileting a problem with a Corgi who has lost the use of his back legs and also any feeling in the rear of his body, I don't envy the owner at all but of course he just loves his Corgi - who happens to be a fine looking fellow with a lovely temperament that hasn't changed despite the terrible accident and the permanent disability.

If you saw that the dog was happy, why did you pity the dog & the owner Michael? Pity would be for the dog who had an owner that was noy able to give him what he needed. Pity would be for the owner that did not love his dog enough to try & help him.

He sounds like a very lucky corgi who's quality of life has been greatly enhanced by his owner. No wonder he was happy!

And I'm sure that Taylor was also happy to meet up with him too, & that they saw each other I am sure as what they both are, dogs. Equally, dogs. No more, no less. Certainly not with the distateful emotion of condisending pity.

You may not envy the owner Michael, but then that may be because you do not understand the very special bond that comes from caring for a beloved companion that has become as ill & depenant as this dog, and needs the tender & constant care that only some are able to give.

Joy is a bond of the heart, there are others bonds as well, some, maybe even stronger.
