Tax Time - 02-04-2007, 09:06 PM

Is anyone else working on their taxes? Depressing, I need a Prozac. Don't you wish you could claim your Corgis as dependents? Milo goes to doggy day care sometimes...can't I get childcare credit or deduction or whatever it is they call it? LOL
Oh well, guess not. Milo does lay under the desk while I do my taxes and serves as a fuzzy foot warmer/massager while I stress over taxes.

You should be able to claim a Corgi as a dependent for tax purposes. Makes logical sense to me. I have placed my Pem Taylor in a special category. He is a farm Working Dog for purposes of micro chipping. This means that that by being classified as a a farm Woring Dog in New Zealand, he is exempt from the expense of the micro chipping procedure. I have attached Taylor to a farmlet not far from where we live. It is a pity that Taylor does not possess the natural inclination to herd or round up livestock like some Corgis including previous Corgis I have had. But he can spot dropped fruit off fruit trees on farms from quite a distance and he is good at comforting horses and donkeys and compelling goats with sharp horns and lethal kicking feet, to play rough with him.

Explain exactly what this means please ... does it mean Taylor is not required to be microchipped because he is a "working dog"? or the fee was lower to have him chipped because of this designation? or???

I would have loved to claim vet bills, dog food, toys etc on my taxes but I am just so glad that I got a little bitty refund that I feel blessed.

In the US you cannot claim your dog as a dependent. NO WAY!!!

In fact you can't even claim the dogs as a hobby unless you show a profit every five years.

You can afford to rent a hall for a birthday party for him but you can't afford the microchip fee? How much is the microchip fee anyway?

Michael,

I thought micro chipping was now mandatory in New Zealand. Are you claiming Taylor as a farm working dog in order to avoid the micro chipping all together?

Micheal - I'm surprised at you! Taylor a working farm dog!!!!

I think if the cost of licences, microchipping, neutering and spaying were made tax deductible in all countries, it would make a small but important difference in how people take care of their pets.

Haven't started my taxes yet, but thank whoever invented the computer software that allows me to fill in the blanks and it does all the hard work!!!

Amen. I will at least get a refund and not have to pay in!! Love Turbo Tax and filling in the blanks! Just hate doing it, it just reminds me how poor I am when it comes to money. I couldn't be richer though when it comes to family, friends and of course my Milo. Guess that is what really matters anyway!!

Hey at least you guys get to save on accountant fees. If I ever tried to do my taxes I would have IRS on my ass so fast it's not even funny. lol
When I add 2+2 I get 5 and that normal for me.
And dogs should count as a deduction, just like kids. H*ll, my son is cheaper.....a lot cheaper and I get $600.00 refund for him. Lord should at least get $300.00, he eats more than that in a year. And that's not even counting vet bills, registration, treats, toys and etc.

Micro chipping became compulsory in NZ last year but exempt are farm working dogs and dogs officially used in the services such as those for guiding the blind, assisting the deaf and physically disabled, for police work, for drug and food detecting. I don't wish to have Taylor micro chipped nor compelled to pay a fee to a vet or other qualified people - even though it can cost as little a $25. The money is not the point. If micro chipping is so helpful to animal control authorities in NZ, why haven't they reduced annual dog registration fees for those owners who have their dogs micro chipped?
So Taylor has become a farm worker. He can be called for duties at any time. He is the farm's emergency backup.

I really do believe that you should be able to claim off dog ownership in regard to personal tax. Afterall tax payers can legitimately leave large sums of money and entire estates to dogs in their wills It would be a good thing for Governments to support tax relief claims re dogs (but one only per household) as dependents as it would encourage dog ownership and maybe on the rebound, with it better care for the dog.
