This is a discussion on Barking Corgi within the General Corgi Discussions forums, part of the General category; I've been struggling with Chloe especially lately with her barking when someone comes to the door. She will not ...

And with mulitple dogs, well getting the all to be quite is next to impossible. For you with one dog, teach her "quiet" or "enough". When she barks say the word you want her to respond to and pop a small treat in her mouth. (She can't bark while eating so you get the response you want.) Praise her for that "good quiet". Be consistant and she will catch on. Yes, it may sound like you're rewarding the wrong behavior but eventually she'll learn that the word gets her the cookie. Then you start weaning her off the cookies so it's only once in awhile. For now it's every time, so put the treats in your pocket. (And remember the small part!) Peggy |

Thanks Peggy...I'll give that a try. My Dachshund also barks, but he quiets down when I ask him to. It sounds like a dog pound sometimes at my house. LOL
Chloe has also been being really obnoxious when we have company with not wanting to leave them alone. They will come into the house, greet her, pet her for a bit but then when they try to talk to me or others in the house she will bark and bark at them. It reminds me of a child trying to get attention. I don't know why this behavior has escalated lately. |

I have noticed the same behaviors in Ponzo lately. I am trying to stay on top of the barking at the people at the door...I am definitely going to do the food trick though (Thanks Peggy!) I think it's because he's bored and understimulated. I try to do some training tricks with him each day and he has gone through a variety of bones, but he used to get at least one 1-2 mile walk each day...Now he's lucky if he gets it on the weekends. I know lots of people on here have colder weather that we do, but it's been down right frigid. However, now that the days are getting longer again I will be able to get in more walks with him regardless of weather unless it's ridiculously cold/snowing.
He was a relatively quiet dog up until about November when the days started ending by 4:45/5:00. That's when his daily walks stopped. So I will see what happens when we get back into that. Are there any other things that I could try. |

My Pem Taylor is the official door greeter in my household. So he is not discouraged from letting us know in no uncertain fashion that someone is at the door. And when the door is opened he greets everyone in typical style. He has been very good at discriminating visitors and family members as to how best to greet/treat them for the past two years. Taylor turns off his 'siren' when he and my wife and I are settled in the master bedroom - unless a complete stranger came to the door alone late at night.

You know what...maybe that's some of Chloe's problem as well. It's been really cold and dreary here lately, and we haven't been getting outside as much as we normally do.
Chloe also had gained a lot of weight after her pups were born a while back. She's recently lost 6 pounds, so I also think that she just feels better and is wanting to be more social. I do want to get this under control though soon. I have no problem with her barking a little to let me know that someone is at the door. I just want her to quiet down in a reasonable time. Thanks for pointing that out. |

Zip and Zia also bark when someone knocks on the door. Zip can usually see through the window who it is. If it is someone he knows really well, he will go to the toy box, get a toy, and take the toy to whoever comes over. Zia does the same as Chloe. She wants everyone's attention.

My mum has always insisted that Buta's hearing is fantastic due to her gigantic ears. We call her the barking manager as she always starts the barking first.

We have found that if we tell Buddy, "Good Boy, Good Boy", he stops barking immediately. Before we started doing this he would just continue to bark. Now that we acknowledge what's happening and his good work in alerting us, he can stop.

I agility circles in New Zealand, Corgis (well Taylor is the lone competitor) are non-barkers. But there are some other breeds and established cross-breeds and non-breeds that have a perchance for barking - some of it persistent and exciteable. So on that front, Corgis come off well as quiet achievers and socialites.

Oh my gosh! The newest annoying ( but oh so cute) thing that Dillon has been doing is if you are in the living room and tell him to come...he first goes to find his ball and THEN he comes to you - if he cant find the ball, then he feels obligated to find SOMETHING to bring to you. We find it funny but try not to show him that ( no laughing at the corgi unless you want this behavior to continue! He is such a clown). Thankfully this same doesnt apply outside... The barking is something that we are also working on, when the UPS guy comes to drop a package, he leaves it on the porch and then rings the door bell and leaves...I could kill him every time for that...Dillon is peacefully napping and he is startled and starts barking and will for about 1-2 minutes...progressively getting quieter with each SHHH that i say to him. But it sure is annoying! A few warning barks, great, 2 minutes of constant barking, not so great. Emilie |

Emilie,
We have the same thing when someone rings the doorbell. Sometimes he will look out the side windows and will bark at the snowplows when they are doing their work. We have lots of different teenagers in and out of our house on weekends and there are certain ones that Cody seems to gravitate to more than others. With those people he hangs close to them and will bark because he wants attention from them, and with others, he will give a quick hello and then go do something else. |

We have Cabin Fever here in upstate NY. The dogs took a long walk in the snow Saturday morning but with 20 knot winds Sunday and since, the wind chills have been sub zero. So needless to say, we do a quick lap around the yard then back in the house.
The barking and velro to me ankle is starting to drive me nuts! Didn't help that Tuck's Agility class cancelled last night due to cold. I didn't take them top Obedience Monday because of work. Fortunately for them, I am travelling to NY today so the hoodlums are with their pals at the puppy sitter. Perked them both up. Tucker helped me close my overnight bag this morning. Think he's trying to get rid of me?
