I was surprised there were so many red/whites and only the one tri! A lot more range of colors naturally among the cardigans - all the corgis were great looking. But I found myself more drawn to the cardigans because of their expressions this year.

We've been keeping an eye on Harry Potter the cardigan for several shows now. We just love him! He came in 4th tonight in the herding group. (First in Houston) I'm not sure how they "judge" these dogs. The ones I like the best rarely come in first!!!

I just changed the channel over when they started the herding group. Harry Potter is cute! I also thought the Pembroke was cute, too. I don't know how they judge either.

Since we do NOT have expanded cable we can't get THE Dog Show... so I was delighted to have that link to the video clip of the Pembrokes' judging! It was really fun to watch especially because the specific breed judgings are not televised during the evening show anyway... That was one happy Tri!!

Judging - crash course

Each breed has a written standard which the blueprint for the "perfect" specimen of that breed. In the breed ring, which the video clips showed, each dog is examined in relation to the standard. Now since there is no perfect specimen, a judge has to take the whole package. Dog A may have a better head than Dog B, but Dog B may be a better mover, Dog C may have a better rear than either Dog A or Dog B. What a judge has to do is determine which one comes closest in all its virtues to the standard.

At the group level, then each dog is examined and compared again to its standard. Here a judge has to decide if the Pembroke is closer to its standard or is the Sheltie closer to its standard. The Sheltie is not compared to the Cardigan or to the German Shepherd Dog, they are compared to their standard and the dog that comes closest to its standard is then selected to win the group. The Best of Breed judge follows this way of judging as well.

Debbie

PS: I am over the moon that Harry P got the group placement. He should have had it at the Eukanuba as well <IMHO> as he just as "on" there as he was tonight. This is the first time a Cardigan has won a group placement at the Garden, so it's a historic night as well.

Harry P is very cute; congratulations to him, and I thought Rowdy was much more handsome once I saw him in the ring, versus the photo I saw of him earlier.

I also thought the Petit Basset Griffon was quite adorable.

Congrats to Harry and Rowdy! I was glad to see both of them place in the competition! Maybe better next year - you never know! Rowdy's Mom had to put her 15 pups with a friend at Fluffycult@yahoogroups.com. Would have loved to seen the pics of the pups. I bet Rowdy's Mom can't wait to get home to the babies!

I hope one day a Corgi will take the big prize. The Springer is a beautiful dog...I grew up with one so they have a special place in my heart. Loved watching the group of Corgis...all those wiggle butts in one place...too cute!
It's fun to watch the show and see all of the different breeds. Harry P is handsome little man, he was first place with Milo and me!

Not unusual at all. I've more than once had the only tri in a class. In fact at a specialty in Oregon my Blackjack was the only tri in the Best of Breed class. It was a large class and I was surprised he was the only tri.

It's quite common for tris to be in the minority. In fact there are times I've been at shows where there weren't any tris entered. (Pems that is.) Not too many but a few.
