Fluffy Butts - 02-15-2007, 04:39 PM

I was watching the video of the dog show just a minute or 2 ago and noticed that all the corgis have really fluffy butts and chests. Montana barley has any fluff. Is that because she is just young and will get fluffier as time goes on or is that just how she is going to be? Someone please advise. I like the fluffy butts. Not that I don't love Montana the way she is.

Thanks

Not much fluff here. We can admire the full fluff though.

Cody's butt has quite a bit of fluff - he is 15 months old

It could just be due to coat type. Izzy has the show coat type and she has a fluffy butt, but Frodo has a working coat and he has little fluff.

Though this might help a bit (even if they are unflattering photos of Izzy and Frodo):

Here is Izzy, her coat is longer than Frodo's, and is much, much softer if you touch it (she has a bunch of butt fluff, but it doesn't show well in this pic):

Here is Frodo, his hair is much shorter than Izzy's, and is coarse to touch and also seems to be a bit more oily (It's probably easiest to see the length difference by looking at the shoulder region):

There was a big conversation on another corgi list that I am on, and it seemed to me that there were 3 diffferent types of common coats.
Working Coat (Frodo)
Show Coat (they used another word also but I forget what it was)
Fluffy Coat

Hope this helps

The dogs you saw have been groomed for the show. Now while they very well might have more coat there are things we do to make the pants stand out more. Mousse in them, blow dry them, sometimes even a bit of hairspray to help them to stay fluffed out.

Glamour coat?

The working coat or tight coat is actually the most correct, but not seen so much in the show ring now days.

The show or glamour coat are similar. The glamour coat is not a fluffy coat as it has the correct harsh texture but is more coat then what most corgis have. The show coat is between the tight coat and the glamour coat and I think the most common now days.

And yes, the fluffy which also has two types, one being a big full coat very similar to a sheltie coat and another that is a bit flatter, more like a longhaired dachshund. Both of these have a soft texture, and there is feathering on the ears and legs.

Glamour coat?
That was it! I knew it was something like that but all I could think of was satin coat and I was pretty sure that wasn't it.

If I was grooming my Pem for a conformation show, I would comb the fluffiness out of his pants so that his rear end hairs would look and point straigher and be smoother and less fluffy, whereas I would comb upwards his chest hairs so that it would present a fuller, fluffier chest so as to give the appearance of a muscular chest.
