Swimming

The pool thread made me remember a question my girls asked me the other day!

We have property with a small lake on it and camp there and spend a lot of time there in the summer --

Question do Corgi's like to swim?

The human girls love to play with there cousin dogs in the water.. they are a lab and a blue healer and they LOVE the water..

Some corgi's love to swim...There are quite a few here at Gocorgi that do, Dillon, not so much...he wades in upto his chest but wont actually swim unless forced! We have his life jacket on and a 30 ft long floating rope and are trying to work with him around water ( not this time of year of course, everything is frozen solid) to get him comfortable with it so we can take him kayaking with us... it is slow going, but i feel better becuase We met a couple who has one of Dillon's relatives and said that for the first three years he didnt care for the water, but after that you couldnt get him out, and their dog was constantly playing in the water while we were there...so there is still hope!!! I do think it is an individual thing...

Hi Donna,

When I got my first Corgi, Riley I was told that Corgis were okay with water. I must have got the first Mer-Corgi as I couldn't keep her out of any water!!!! She was crazy - you couldn't even say the word swim in a sentance and she'd run for the door. There's a couple of photos of her jumping into a pool on the pool thread. She loved the creek, river, lake and pool - she would fall asleep in the lake as she would refuse to come out!

Rupert, my male, fell into the same pool when he was 9 weeks old - so although he never liked to jump in, he loves all water too. He prefers the amphibious vehicle approach where you run full tilt down the beach and into the water until you are swimming!

Jemma, my newest never saw water until I got her at 7 months, but the day after we brought her home she went into the lake. I think she'll be more interested this summer - she likes to retrieve things out of it.

So, some folk's Corgis will just wade a little - but then some are just crazy about it!

This is Riley and Rupert swimming against the current in the river - they would go in, turn into the current and just swim in place without moving!

Jackie is like her cousin Dillon - no swimming for her!!! She's not a fan of getting wet at all, but I am still trying to convince her that swimming is fun . . .

Checkers thinks water was sent to earth as his own personal play thing. His first birthday got him a baby swimming pools so he could jump in and play in the water in the summer... he loved it. If you check out my dogster page you'll see he even stoops to jumping in the bathtub to get his water fix! Can't wait until it's warm enough again to let him go swimming!

Tucker loves the water! Hard to keep him out. Lulu, not so much. But she was such a baby last summer, maybe next summer she will enjoy it more.

Tucks buddies come over (we live on a lake to) and play water fetch! They all wear life jackets when they play so they don't tire out so fast.

When it's just Tucker, I tend to not have him wearing a life jacket. I want him to be able to swim w/ confidence w/o it.

I took Tucker out in the kayak several times last summer. He took a bit of getting used to it but he preferred being in the kayak w/ as opposed to being left at the dock w/o me!

What a hoot! He'd see his buddies, the dobermans next door, neighbors, etc and bark at them as if to say "look at me!". Of course, he wears a life jacket in the kayak!

That reminds me! I have to buy a larger size lifejacket for Lulu! I've actually seen a pink and white polka dot life jacket! Wohoo!

Depends on the dog. Some do and some don't. Some will play in sprinklers or wading pools and still not like deeper water or like to swim.

Remember though that a corgi has most of it's weight in the front end and some are not balenced so well and don't swim well. Don't ever leave them to swim alone.

You'll just have to take your girl out and see what she thinks.

logs loves to swim in slow moving rivers and will go in the sea if the waves are not too high, although every now and again she forgets herself and gets bowled. When we kayak, she occasionally "falls" off the side. Complete accident of course.
Yeah, right!
