Westminster show best of breed videos

If you want to see about 15 Cardis and Pems parade around during the best of breed judging at the recent Westminster dog show, click onto westminsterkennelclub.org and then onto videos and then onto 2nd day judging and click either cardigan or pembroke. Great viewing for corgi lovers. They are all so cute.

History was made at this year's Westminister Kennel Club's dog show for the Cardigan breed. HarryP's placement in the herding group marked the first time a Cardigan had ever placed in the group at the Westminister show.

Thank you for explaining how to get the video. Harry Potter is gorgeous with that coat color, oh my. Minimal ground clearance though.

No reds, tans makes me wonder if there are any out there breeding. I hope so, Pepper's Dad, Percy was a gorgeous red and I hate to see that color disappear.

Oh heck, I've lost the website of a cardigan corgi breeder that explained the genetics of each color.

I wanted to see what parents make a red. There just seems to be so many r/w pembrokes and fewer and fewer r/w cardigans.

I found a pembroke explanation of paler reds etc. Interesting info.

I always root for the Cardigan and always to no avail. I did get excited when the Cardi was called out a second time and when he was called out fourth with 3 other dogs a third time the announcer ruined it by saying that is probably the order of finish. One of these days the Cardi will get its due as they are just so cute. I guess the breed does not conform to the standard as well as other breeds do as the reason why the Cardi doesn't do well.

It was either the Phi-Vestavia or Aragorn websites for the color charts.

Red and black are the two base colors for Cardigans, black is recessive to red.

Reds can appear from a red to red breeding, brindle to any coloring (depending if red is being carried). It is also
possible (and I emphasis possible) for black & white to black & white w/points of either brindle or tan points (IF the brindle might be carrying for red) to produce a red. There are also a couple of other possible ways for "red" to appear. There is a dilute in Cardigans called chinchilla which acts on the brindle color pattern. Phenotypically one sees a pale red dog, genotypically it is a brindle. Recently another "red" has been figured out in the gene pool, the little "e" red and this is different than the base color red. Little Biscuit on this forum is a little "e" red.

Reds do appear, just not that many in the show ring not that many of the quality to be specialed and seen on the big TV dog shows. There are a few breeders around that somewhat specialize in them and in fact a lovely red b*tch won the National Specialty a few years back. They are somewhat more difficult to finish, although this past weekend reds had their share of wins at the Greenville, SC shows.

I decided since I didn't get to see the Mon-Tues show since I don't have that channel, that I would order the DVD. That way I can pause and look all I want! Of course, it was a pre-order as they won't be available until March 20th but, that's ok...good things come to those who wait.

Well, sometimes getting it's due (recognition on TV) is not in the best interest of a breed. Pembrokes are a good example of that.

Oh there have been Cardigans which conformed more closely to their standard than some of other breeds have done to theirs that have gone up, I'd be willing to bet on that. For one thing, Cardigans are not a flashy, up, HEY, LOOK AT ME type breed, especially IF temperament is correct. At the level of Westminister, showmanship is important, outgoing and flashy helps get a dog noticed. There are a lot of variables, factors, $$$$, politics, as a short list, that go into Westminister wins.
