Fluffy corgis?
OK I ran across some pics the other day of what appeared to be a long haired corgi. I also noticed on some their neck hair is markedly longer making it appear mane like. Is this normal in corgis? Mine have a little longer ruffs on their necks but not enough you go wow that is a fluffy dog. Fisher does have 2 sections - one behind each shoulder - which I call his angel wings which appear a tad longer than the rest of his coat. I havent been around enough corgis to know for sure what is acceptable in coat appearance. Thanks for the explanation in advance.

There is a coat mutation in corgis where some are born with a longer coat. They can be born in a litter of regular corgis. It's a major fault in the show ring. My corgi, Shippo, is a "Fluffy" and he sure is fun to keep groomed! >@_@<
Here is a slightly crappy stack of him to show his fluff: ![]() Sorry for the horrible quality lmao... Here's a better one of him just walking around: ![]() I hope those aren't huge... my screen resolution is like 1280x800... >@_@< Let me know and I will make them simple attachments instead. Also, here is a nifty link to the PWCCA's Fluffy page: Fluffy Pembroke Welsh Corgi And another nifty link to genetics: Canine Fluffy Coat Length Test |

I'm glad you answered that question because I wondered the same thing. The fluffy coat is beautiful, but I can understand that people want to keep the breed pure. Still, if someone had a fluffy coated Corgi that show up in a litter I would take it in a heartbeat, since I don't show dogs or breed them. Which leads me to the next question - Can you tell at a Corgi's puppy stage that this gene mutation is inherent in the puppy you've chosen from a breeder?

As for those that carry the gene (it takes one gene from each parent to get a fluffy coat) the only way to tell is by the DNA test. Peggy

my breeder can often tell within the first 3 days if a puppy will be a fluffy...something in the smoothness and a patent leather look to the puppy coat, different from the rest of the litter. She is not 100% sure until the puppies are about 2-3 wks old but she was able to tell on Dillon's litter by day three that both his brothers were going to be fluffies....she also could tell that Jackie was going to be a fluffy early on as well ( i talked to her when the puppies were only 6 days old and she already was telling me that she was pretty sure that one of the females were fluffy-
Personally, i think that the fluffies are beautiful- Jackie, shippo (love that second photo by the way) Chloebelle...just to name a few beauties! Emilie |

[ Lighter in color than the rest of his coat too? Those are called harness marks. Marks left from where a harness or saddle would have been, according to the legend about the fairys using them as steeds.
Peggy[/quote] Does anyone have a picture of what this looks like? I don't think my Corgi has them and I'd love to see what they look like. I can't wait to tell my little girls the fairy legend. They're gonna eat it up!

Look and I'll bet you'll see them. I've not seen a Pembroke with out them. Some just more noticeable than others. Peggy

I have two corgis. One has all the standard characterics. However, the other is a fluffy. She has the same parents as my first one. Just three litters apart. She also has AKC papers.
She however does not look anything like the other fuffies I have seen online. She has the corgi body. But hair is very thick and downy. Ears don't stand up and she kind of has more of the sheltie personality. Maybe I could get on of my kids to help me post a picture. |
