Many breeds gain popularity and then wane a bit... it would be sad if cardigans were not part of Wales but I don't believe that cardigans as a whole will disappear.

to some people with only a cursory knowledge of cardigans and pems they may seem like the same dog with/without tail but we all know differently. I have two Pems but after learning of all the wonderful traits of the cardi I for one would love add one to our family some day.

well this is quite the thread. Michael- you really put your foot in your mouth this time.

maybe you just weren't clear enough in what you meant- but even so I am tiring quite quickly of the attitude around here. It's not quite as fun as it was when I first joined.

So you think that the only difference between a Cardigan and a Pem is the tail? It's too bad that the super moderator of this site isnis so short sighted.

Muddypaws Amanda, I suggest you read my post again on this thread. Maybe it was you who had their hands over their spectacles.

WOW, I really expected a better response michael, like for starters an apology to the cardi owners here ... Trying to gloss over this one is not the right move, nor is pointing the finger at us like we MISREAD what you wrote... truely what you posted was insensitive and maybe YOU should re-read YOUR post to see why you have upset nearly the entire Gocorgi community.... we expect to see these comments from outsiders who don't know corgis, but from one of our own? sad , really really sad.

on a side note, before finding Gocorgi, I didn't know too much about the Cardigans, but after learning more and more about them, I think my next corgi may very well be a cardigan...

Ummm, nope - I think Amanda's spectacles were freshly cleaned and the intended meaning was clear as freshly Windexed glass. Going to have to try again.

Debbie, though your rant is meandering on the topic a little bit, I have to say, as an owner of both a purebred AKC registered Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a pound mutt (CWC/Bassett Hound we think) I agree with every word, especially the quoted part. And it's worth noting that a pound mutt can be a fantastically wonderful companion. My little Newman is an absolute treasure. Not to take anything against the bunnybutted Tucker .

People don't get corgis because only of the bunnybutt. The tiny legs, foxy face, and personality are big draws. CWCs and PWCs are both just as wonderful!!!

Michael,

You surely are an interesting fellow....
I was trying to not blow my top about this...well you in particular, and it seems that you are bent on trying to piss people off.
you have succeeded by the way. I am pretty ticked off that rather than admit that perhaps you were wrong and RUDE, you would rather insult people, again?!?!

I quite dislike you and I have only been here for a short time. Just so you know. I am not usually the type of person to judge someone before even really knowing them but well, you have made it quite clear the kind of person you are.

I had a good chat with an international conformation judge and a Cardi breeder named Bridget and she too is concerned at the dwindling numbers of Cardigan Corgis in parts of the world. In New Zealand, there are currently only two Cardigan Corgi breeders. Bridget said the UK seriously lacks Cardis and some Cardi show clubs in the UK (Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland) are concerned that they won't be able to run championship shows for their breed through lack of numbers and will therefore lose their (the clubs) status. Bridget has recently exported Cardi pups to the UK. But she says that having recently judged in Finland she discovered that there seems to be as many Cardis in Finland as there are Pems. And Corgis are popular in Finland. In at least one of the shows she judged in Finland, there were 20 more Cardigan than Pem entries.
One of the members of the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Club got their Cardi named Megs from a pet shop - of course with no papers. Bridget thinks Megs who acts most un-Cardi-like, is probably a Cardi-Pem cross. She and her several brothers and sisters were selling at pet shops as pure Cardigan Corgis and for much more price-wise than Corgis with pedigree papers sell for in NZ.

I've met Bridget, very nice lady.

UK registrations for Cardigans over the last 10 years:

"from the Winter 2006 KC Breed Record Supplement
registration figures for Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) from 1997 - 2006
*
1997 : 98
1998 : 83
1999 : 79
2000 : 77
2001 : 50
2002 : 56
2003 : 74
2004 : 76
2005 : 77
2006 : 84
*
the breed with the most registrations was again the Labrador Retriever, with
45,700 registered in 2006"

The exporting of Cardigans from NZ to the UK is a rather normal occurrence as is from NZ to the US as well as from the UK to the US and the reverse. In the US from time to time, Cardigan entries will outnumber Pembroke entries as well.

Here are numbers from Finland:
"Year - Cardigans registered- Pembrokes registered
2002 - 98 - 220
2003 - 132 - 222
2004 - 163 - 214
2005 - 160 - 241
2006 - 157 - 282
CARDIGANS 2002 thru 2006
Number of puppies registered: 683
Number od imports registered: 27
Number of dogs registered: 710 (puppies + imports)
Number of litters registered: 118
Number of stud dogs used: 69
Of those stud dogs, 25 sired multiple litters, accounting for 62% of the dogs registered (= 683 pups)
Of those 25 dogs, 10 produced 260 pups between them, accounting for 35% of the total number registered.
Of those all used stud dogs, 19 imported or non-finnish registrated sired 34% of the dogs registered (=234 pups).
All of this statistics and much more information can be found from Finnish Kennelclub's online database called DogNet (KoiraNet in Finnish): http://jalostus.kennelliitto.fi/frmEtusivu.aspx?Lang=en&R=38"

So as I said, while numbers may be limited in the UK, internationally the Cardigan breed is in pretty sound shape. We even have a couple of US Cardigan breeders who partner with some kennels in Finland.

Sounds like the US <sigh> and illustration of why a degree of discernment in placing puppies and encouraging breeding is needed.
