Crufts Dog Show - 03-04-2007, 06:25 AM

Starts Thursday
Corgis are on Friday- my friend has two qualified but one is out of coat and she doesn't think she can show her. The other is my Sooty's half sister and is showing in the seniors- she will be 11 this year and is in wonderful shape.

I'll keep an eye on the results for everyone in the Pems and Cardis and look out for video clips.

Started to watch the Eukinuba Dog show on Animal Planet Saturday night. Couldn't stay awake to see the Corgis. How did they do?

Love to see the videos if you can get some of the Cruft's show.

When they've blown the undercoat and all they have is the topcoat/guard hairs. Looking rather thin and naked. Not in "show condition".

Out of coat can also mean when a Corgi is in full scale shedding and the problems this promotes including in a the show ring when been handled by a judge. - running his/her fingers through the coat which could rake up a bunch of loose hairs. Also shedding can make a coat appear dulled and lifeless. Constant brushing and combing to a shedding Corgi can also alter the overall shape of the Corgi.

Um, that's what blowing coat means, full scale shedding.

Depends on the judge and how good your dog is. The standard says they should not be penalized for seasonal lack of undercoat. (But they usually are!) If the judge knows that and goes by they they might not care.

I was showing Blackjack once and the judge going over him (getting a handful of hair), says "oh, he's blowing coat". My reply was "he needed to!".

Again, depends on the dog. The coat usually looks dull and lifeless just before they blow. I've shown dogs out of coat, Trixie looked better when she was a bit out of coat. Morgan carries so much coat he can be shown out of coat. Lacy has a Reserve Winners Bitch at a specialty when she was out of coat.

Actually it doesn't. When you loose the coat, then you see what you've really got. When the dog is in full coat, you often have an illusion of what's really there and it's easier to "sculpt" out faults.

In the US that's referred to as blowing coat. Baby wipes (yes those modern miracles ) are kept on stewards tables for the judges to wipe their hands.

Usually more right before they start blowing. A top coat, if the dog and its coat are in good condition and healthy will continue to have its sheen.

IF all the undercoat is brushed out, what one sees is pretty much what is there in the dog, no undercoat left to maybe sculpt a little here and there to hide or emphasize a feature. Now if one would leave sections or clumps of undercoat in, then a dog could look "lumpy" maybe. Many a dog gets a big win because of their outstanding structure because it isn't hiding underneath all the coat.

Jane,

Corgis did not place in the herding group, I thought they should have been number 1 and 2 of course. I do not remember what dogs did place in the herding group, after the corgis were dismissed I went to bed.
