Herding What ????? - 03-05-2007, 08:02 PM

DH was at work today, and a new employee and he were discussing dogs.

He showed her some pics of ours and she asked what were they breed for?

DH told her herding.

She then asked herding what ? Squirrels ???

LOL

She was very impressed with our wonderful breed.

Tell them that Corgis can herd deer. Most people would believe you but the short answer is that neither Corgis nor any other dog can herd deer to an acceptable degree.

Deer! They are the very worst to herd! So edgy, so skittery! So dangerous.
Believe me.

Clogs - in that case, why not a deer herding Corgi? The only animals that Taylor has got enamoured with are rabbits and goats. He just wants to have them chase him so9 he can show off his speed, sidestep, swerve and 360 degree instant change of direction If he can avoid the horns and the legs of a kicking, head-to-ground goat, he can place a stranglehold on a mob of deer - or maybe just a little bambi for starters.

I thought the same thing as you. If Michael thinks it would be easy for a Corgi to herd deer, I would almost pay money to see that

Herding what!? Liam says herding WHATEVER!!! He thinks it is his annointed appointed duty to keep the squirrels off the bird feeder. And to keep the cats in line (yeah right), and to make me walk across the patio in a straight line. This is why he gets to work woolies tomorrow.

We we first got Molsen he would herd my guinea Pig into the corner and wait until it moved to put it back. Now he likes to herd Miller who is the younger dog ... or Jon (my husband!)

Hah! Your original comment was pretty much accurate, Michael, but your second picture is amusing. I have herded deer, and the only way to do it is v-e-r-y slowly and from a great distance. As soon as you get anywhere near them, they scatter to all corners of the paddock. They don't tend to bunch up under pressure in the same way as sheep do and are much quicker to move and break than cattle are.

Clogs likes to herd, too and the favourite "animal" is me and the wheel-barrow. Rushes to the front to stop the leader from going too fast, then to the back to keep the straggler in line. Much grinning involved all round.

Taylor ignores sheep and cattle but he is most intense with guinea pigs in hutches with runs. He will stare at them for lengthy periods, and if they move he will steer them into a corner or back into their hutch (or whatever a gp house is called. He is also good at herding a floor level budgie.

Mazie likes to herd my husband and the lawnmower (not when it is running, of course ). She likes to help him get it back to the shed!
