A new addition- maybe - 03-09-2007, 07:10 PM

So as some of you know I am a main volunteer in a local dog rescue group. We get a lot of dogs through- and I foster many of them myself- all with no problem finding them that perfect home. I have been doing this for more than five years now and have only ever kept one dog out of that time (Sam) and he doesn't even really count because I knew as soon as I heard about him that he was staying. So anyway things have changed with the newest foster and I really need you all to tell me not to keep him.

His name is Jackson (he came named) and he is 16 weeks old. He is a border collie corgi cross and is an amazing little pup. He has all the great (in my opinion) traits of a corgi but with a little bit of BC thrown in for good measure. He is super smart, very stubborn, likes to cuddle, and he has adjusted so well here, it's like he has always been. I have been fostering him for about a week now- since I went and picked him up from his previous home. (his is the typical case of people not doing their research before buying a puppy- who knew a BCxCorgi would chase and nip at horribly behaved children!!!)

So I am completely in love with this little guy- He is determined, athletic, adorable and did I mention he's short???? He is very corgi like in the way he acts. He has already caught on to bark like one!

I have three dogs already- a GSD who is retired, and two active wild corgis who keep me more than busy enough. But at this point my friend keeps telling me- what's one more?! and yeah, what is one more.

Anyway- just thought I could bounce that off all of you, see what you think. I am really thinking about it, but want to be sure. With Sam I knew right away he was the dog for me- and with Jackson I think one of the reasons I am holding back is because he's a puppy and I don't know what he's going to be when he grows up. It sounds petty but it is a pretty important factor for me. I really need a specific kind of dog in my pack- one who is wild, unruly, and who can stand their ground. I also need a dog who is physically able to do what he/she loves. and I think he may be that dog.
So, I'd like you all to tell me not to keep him.

oh- I have attached pics so you can all see what I'm up against.

oh Amanda, I can't tell you not to keep him....You have to make that decision yourself, only you know if you can handle another, if you think that he will fit into your pack...but oh my gosh is he cute, and he sounds smart, and he is young enough and you are a good enough trainer to be able to work with him- I think you do so much with your dogs, and you make time for them all ....do you think that keeping him would take a lot away from your others? It is a hard decision, but while you dont know what he will turn out like as an adult, you have exceptional training skills and can mold him into what you need him to be to some degree... not that i am trying to convince you either way...oh man, i would hate to be in your shoes right now... tough choice to make... I probably was completely unhelpful here...sigh

Oh, Amanda! What a cute puppy! I feel sorry for you. Sorry, but I don't think I'm very helpful either! You just need to do what you feel is right and best for him and your others. Good luck!

What a tough decision, glad I am not in your shoes right now! I say, follow your heart, only you can really know what is right. He is a cute little guy and it sounds like you want to keep him. If you are sure of the breed mix he is, at least you know what traits you are going to deal with.
I think he looks like an interesting little character and if he fits into your home with the other critters...sounds like a keeper. Good luck and keep us posted.

Wow, this is a lot of pressure for us!!!

Let's see, I'm doing this without looking at his adorable photos. You have space, dogs to keep him company, the good sense and ability to train and deal with a dog of his breed mix, you are dedicated, your dogs are given the opportunity to do things that suit their physical and personality traits, this is a border/corgi mix - could it be any smarter?, and you have a good instincts about dogs. Nope get rid of him now.

Seriously, Amanda, I think you'd be great with him, you know that some of what he is going to be is programmed in already, but growing up with your guideance and your other dogs, he'll fit in and be part of your pack in no time.

I'm going to get off the fence and say - he's a keeper!!

I'll agree with Deb here; you've got what it takes to properly care for this dog AND you are already in love with him!

Oh and he looks adorable in those pictures. I vote to keep him!

I say keep him, too. Come on - you know you want to! You just came to the board for validation, right??

He is precious - and a border collie/corgi mix? What a great (but stubborn) combo!

oh Deb- you crack me up. Well unless a perfect home opens up for him he will be staying here. and by perfect I mean a better home than me. I am going to give him a few more weeks at least to work out some of his problems- food possesivness, his nipping etc. and see where we go from there.
I was at an agility seminar all day today and he came along for fun and he did great. He of course was the cutest thing there so got a ton of attention and socialising.
Now the next question for you all is what should I call him? I don't mind the name Jack but I haven't really thought about the name thing much-
with Sam I kept his name because I couldn't think of anything better at the time.....I am sure you all have some great name suggestions. Bring 'Em on!

Since he is a Collie-Corgi cross why not give him a C name - like Clarrie or Cleary. Yeah, a Collie-Corgi cross named Clarrie. I like it.

Okay I looked at his photos and the name that came into my head was Jet. Don't know why - that's how I am with names - they come to me. He needs to have a name that sounds nothing like Sam, Wicca or anything else in your household.

He looks like he'll go like a Jet and it's close to Jack - not that he can't learn a name that is totally different - just ask Felicity - I mean Jemma!!

Good luck!!!
