Corgi's compared to other dogs I know. - 03-11-2007, 06:55 PM

The more I see what Bailey can do the more impressed I am. I have educated myself about Corgis and what they can do, but it's still impressive to see it in action. Lots of people say a Corgi is a small dog with a big dog attitude. Now I understand what they mean.
He goes to the dog park most days for an hour or two. Typically there will be 7 or 8 dogs there, and on weekends sometimes as much as 20. Today he spent a lot of the time playing with a black Mastif. He has more fun with medium and big dogs. He likes the Great Danes, the Dobermans, the Rotweilers etc. Once in a while a puppy his size will wrestle with him. He has never show any aggresion to any dogs. He does jump up on the huge dogs and tugs on the left ear to get things started. But no one gets upset, it's wrestle or chase time. It's not fight club. He loves to wrestle with the biggest Husky I have ever seen. It's quite a sight too see a Corig on top of a huge Husky, when the Husky is on his back on the ground. Then they trade places.

I watch him every second to see if he will be OK when wrestling with a big dog. He's always fine. It's one of his favorite things. He loves to be chased by or to chase a big dog. The other small dogs might be to fragile for Bailey. He goes where I want, when I want, and will go to a dog or a person on command or return and will say "hi" too. He will leave the cats alone if I tell him too. Today I had him get the frisbee out of the mud for me, he was already muddy, and I was not.
I know this is not something amazing for a herding breed. But now I see how easy it would be to train him to herd. He's almost there now. He looks at me for instructions all the time. Most of the other dog owners are impressed at what he wil do for me.

I guess I'm the nervous type and would have a coronary going to a dog park where there was Rottweilers or Pit Bulls. I could just see a little 28 pound Corgi being used for a chew toy by one of them. I have seen videos of Corgis and Dobermans playing and that amazed me he didn't get tired of their antics and take a bite. Guess I stereotype the big guys too much but after all, they do outweigh them by quite a bit and tower over them...just me, I suppose.

ColColt, you'd be surprised to know how gentle the guardian breeds can be. Any dog can get annoyed and bite, even "sweet" breeds like Goldens and Labs. I see more fights at the dog park started by Border Collies and Lab mixes - most of the rotts/dobes/GSDs/etc. out at the dog parks (at least, in my area) are well behaved and very tolerant of other dogs.

I have two dobes and a corgi, and the dobes are great with Ada. My male adores her and her antics, and they wrestle daily. My older dobe ignores her for the most part, but little Ada seems to look up to her, and will follow her around like a shadow... Ilsa doesn't mind the attention and reverance at all!

Ada's motto is, "If your friends are taller than you, rise to meet them, physically and mentally!"

Proof:

Ada follows Ilsa around...

Ronin gets down to "her level" to play...

And just for a comparison... these gentle giants are very drivey, intense dobes. Here's Ilsa with her 6'5" "daddy"... "GIMME DA BALL NOWWW!"

ColCort the other thing to realize is a corgi is so much faster than a rott. My old Pepper's play with a friend's younger rott was funny. The rott stepped over her to assert dominance and she just scooted on her way. The rott looked down thinking where the heck is she, not realizing how low to the ground she was.

Now a lab, well she didn't appreciate getting hit in the face with their strong tail. She hid under my legs. Her favorite neighborhood male was a pit bull. Guess she did like those boys without the hurting tail! She wanted nothing to do with the yappy yorkie around the corner.

As a pup, she played with a fox terrior, but as she aged she liked the bigger dogs, more mellow. Though size didn't matter, it was personality and energy. She wanted to be around lower energy in her older age.

Bailey's Driver is on to something. My Taylor races at break neck speed after very few dogs, but as far as I can recall, the occasions he has done it are in trying to catch or race after big dogs- from Labradors upwards. Last Sunday he and his Pembroke Corgi friend, Taffy, went helter skelter after two enormous dogs on two different occasions - and it wasn't warfare, just fun.

I remember seeing a video not long ago with Ada frapping all around Ilsa and how she basically was ignoring her jumping and barking. Those two remind me of an old comic strip called Mutt and Jeff!! If you remember that, you're older than you realize. Those are great shots, BTW and I particularlly like the first one...looks like pouncing time.

I've never been around the larger breeds much, Merrie, and they seem like the Odd Couple when you see a large Rottie or Doberman with a petite Corgi. It's great to know they all get along. That's what it's all about.

I think I have written this in a previous thread a long time ago (I have been away for a while) but from when Koda was just a little puppy he prefered the company of bigger dogs over ones his own size. He seems to relate better with them and has much more fun wrestling with them than other smaller dogs. The thing that I have to keep on reminding myself is that Corgi's are a hardy breed with much bigger bones and more muscle than simualry sized terriers and toy breeds. One of the people that I work with has a Cairn Terrier that looks to be the same size as Koda and is actually taller but is exactly half the weight of him.

Actually that was Ronin... and he was loving every minute of it! And yes, I kow Mutt and Jeff - but not because I'm old... I've taken a lot of Art History classes, and one of my professors was a big fan of comics and graphic novels - I recognize more old cartoons than most people twice my age!

Rosie has a neice who is a rottie/huntaway cross called Shadow. She is a big, big girl and the bounciest, most full-on dog that I know. She was a pup when Rosie was full grown already and around the same size. But once she got bigger, she used to bounce Rosie around the place with her superior weight. Rose doesn't take too kindly to being bounced and lets Shadow know when she steps out of line.
But the interesting thing is that Rosie is still the dominant dog and whenever they meet, the giant Shadow races over, lowers her head, and tries to place it under Rosie's chin in the submissive position. She just about has to get down on her knees to do so, so it looks pretty funny from our perspective.
But of course we would never deprive them of their dignity and laugh.

Haha! Yeah, I'm a graphic design major in a four-year program - our coursework is extensive, and the program is geared towards the "elite" graphic design positions - we are the ones that will be designing "the cool stuff" for salaries up to 200k a year... fun fun fun!

We're required to take a lot of art history classes, and one of the most rigorous has an entire section on comics - since comics were one of the first widely accessible pieces of graphic art... a very important piece of our history! Comics were traced from the Katzenjammer Kids in Germany up to modern day comics, while also including graphic novels. In the course of that particular section, we read Maus I and II, Persepolis, A Contract With God, and a few others... it was a great class!
