Do you walk your dog in the dark? Is your dog a dark color? How would you find him if got off the leash somehow? Can the cars see him?
This is a short video of Bailey wearing his reflective collar that has flashing red lights all around it. I use another one over his back too.

Dylan has the same callar, and I wear an orange glow scarf that I made.
I don't even want to think of him getting off of his leash, especially after dark!

I bought Dillon a Ruffcoat "lab coat" that lights up. It has a battery pack, and it has two stripes of bright blue light that go down the sides, he can be seen for 500 yrs...
here is a photo of the product: Ruff Wear Lighted Lab Coat - FREE Shipping - ALTREC.COM
where you see the small reflective stipes, that is what you turn on at night ( has a tiny battery pack on the top) and it lights up solid or you can have it blink... pretty cool...

I use a harness that is attached at the middle on top of the shoulders for Bailey. Is there anything in the way that would keep me from making a hole in that vest, on the top middle, for the leash to attach to the harness?

Well....
I had a great vest for Tucker that had reflective strips but he fought me on it and fortunately for him, he out grew it.
I have a lighted collar, I have a reflective leashe, I have cute bandanas that have reflective strips on them then I also have these leg bands that are reflective.
I became concerned that headlights are aimed higher than the dogs so now I am decked out in safety gear. I have the most obnoxious Helly hansen crossing guard coat (bought on sale). You can see me a miles away! I also wear a flashing light strip off the zipper.
AND STilll cars come flying by and looked totally put out that they have to slow down when they get close.

Ok i checked the lighted lab coat, and here is the thing, It doesnt come up high on the neck, it actually lays close to the shoulder blades as the first part, then there is a 2 -3 inch battery pack on the top but below that there is nothing that would be in the way for you to make a hole, but i am not sure how far down the body the harness loop is - you might even be able to get it so that the jacket doesnt need to be cut if it is high enough on the back - the wires go down the sides from the battery pack they are not on the top, and this coat doesnt provide warmth, it is not lined, it is thin, water repellant windbreaker type material, which is great for keeping them somewhat dry on top if it is raining..but i got it mostly for the protection of being seen while walking after dark...
Susan, better safe than sorry, especially when you live in a rural area where people are flying down the road not expecting to see people and animals and such.. I am in a pretty busy neighborhood so we have lots of cars and people and dogs and such but you wouldnt believe how fast people still drive around here, that is why i try to make sure that i am seen no matter what!

Just a thought, be sure that when walking after dark you're walking against traffic so you can see what's coming at you and that you keep the dog on your left away from the street. Just a tad bit safer that way.

Walking after dark here, no way. The coyotes are out in a pack. During the day they are alone. Besides the squirrels are bedded down at night and that is half the fun of a "walk" here. We will run on our deck or extra play inside.
In the winter my husband wears the reflective pullover vest when he jogs. But at times he feels the vest just makes the cars aim at him better!

If you were approaching Bailey's trike from the rear or the side in a car this is what you would see. (Video of tail lights on his trike)
