congradulations to Peanut
My Duchess is almost eight now and haven't had her a year yet. It is good to hear from someone who has a dog in good condition at the age of fifteen. Continued good health Peanut.

If Peanut at 15 has no facial greyness and is female, then that is quite outstanding. And if her hearing and eyesight are still virtually perfect and she can trot around on extensive walks daily, then she is one of those Corgis who could be around when she is twenty,
There is a rumour that a Pem in New Zealand had lived until he was 26 and a daughter of the Pem, owned by the same person, had lived til 23. But I don't know whether I'll ever be able to follow up on this because I have lost trace of the person who told me. That person is a relative of the Corgi owner who had died some years ago. |

Alrighty then...
Peanut is a neutered male with minor arthritis that seems to be under control with his daily glucosamine-chondroitin tablets. He has become partially deaf, though sometimes it's hard to tell when that deafness is showing or if he's just ignoring me. As far as blindness goes, his eyes have become somewhat cloudy over the years, but this doesn't seem to have affected his vision any. Finally (for now), his face has definitely grayed over the years. He used to have these cute black "eyebrows" that gave him a perpetually sad look. ---- By the way, I mostly lurk and rarely post. |

It's marvellous what can be done these days for arthritis in dogs. It use to be crippling and painful but with medication, Corgis can again become active and happy.
Cataract of the eyes is a very common problem for the ageing Corgi. If one had the money, cataract operations for dogs can be just as successful as those for humans. One can perform cataract operations for as little as $12 per eye on humans - this was the fee charged by a famous NZ eye specialist a few years ago - so I suppose the operation could be relatively inexpensive on dogs too. But find me a benevolent vet. Wouldn't it be really lovely for our older Corgis to have a simple op to restore the very keen eysight they once had. Corgis just love seeing everything as clear as possible at from a good distance. |
