Another Corgi Sighting!!

I usually go to Pet Smart at least every other Saturday if not every one. Today as I walked in, I saw a red/white Pem standing on the grooming table! I thought I had reached Nirvana. I stood there the whole time watching as they sheared nearly all his fur off wondering why. They were using some of the electric clippers and took nearly all his fur from the neck to the tail leaving maybe half an inch. All he had left was the fur on his legs and ears. He looked around at me a couple of times as if to ask, "What are they doing?" The only thing that separated me from him was about six feet and a quarter inch piece of glass.

After they let him down, they took him through the back door and I never got to see him again even they I waited about fifteen minutes inside and then went outside another fifteen minutes hoping to see his parents and be able to talk with them. I hate I missed that. That was the first time I had been that close to a Corgi since Katie, even though she wasn't 100% Corgi, it still made my day.

I know...sure hope I can go, too. I'm still grinning like a mule eating briars through a Pickett fence!

From what I've been told....

My Tucker, went to his foster parents directly from a farm where he had been breeding. He had been living on the farm and was extremely stinky! They nicknamed him "Stinky Twinkie" (a nickname that has stuck). They combed him, washed him, but they couldn't get the stench out of him! So they had him shorn like that, and washed, and that took care of things.

I've heard some mention (maybe here?) that they get their Corgis trimmed or shaved at this time of year because of the way they shed SO much. Supposedly it's not very good for their coats, though...and I couldn't ever imagine having it done myself...

IMO, it's not good for the dog. Dogs have coats for a reason, the coats protect their skin. When you shave a dog, especially one not meant to be shaved, like a corgi you expose the skin to the sun and the dog can be sunburned. The coat also protects them from insect bites, (well doesn't do much for fleas, but that's another story), thorns or stickers on plants, scratches they might get from teeth while playing with another dog, etc.

My whippet who has a short coat gets nicks much more easily than a corgi does, just from wresting with the corgis.

The undercoat serves as insulation, it protects them from the heat as well as the cold. Just like insulation in a home. They will shed out what they don't need.

IMO, you should not shave corgis.

I have no objection to a fluffy Corgi being trimmed for the summer season because their coats are a different texture and the thickness of their coats makes it uncomfortable, but not the standard coated Corgis. A well trimmed area of a Corgis coat may never grow back the way it was originally. There are some Corgis who have one side of their trousers (pants) or skirt different to the other through being trimmed at some earlier stage.

Peggy has made some good points.

Really? Tucker's just a hairy shed machine all over now. Real furry fluffy bunny butt!!! Granted, I don't know how closely he was shorn when they removed the farm stink from him.

And trimmed is not shaved. I also don't object to a fluffy being trimmed some. To me that means to shorten the coat some that doesn't mean to shave it off.

And yes, it is possible for coats to come in differnetly after being shaved. Sometimes that does happen. Usually not though. I've had some shaved for surgery and they grew back ok. But it is possible.

Too funny! I can imagine the corgi felt like a kid with a burr haircut. I wouldn't do it, but it seems tempting. My husband has been complaining that Liam was stinky. I snuggled him up to me in my lap and took a big whiff of him and whew he IS stinky. He gets a bath tomorrow, but no shave.
