Carrying Things?

I've been meaning to ask others this for a while. My female Pem Riley, who passed away last summer, used to pick up tennis balls, sticks, pinecones, plastic bottle tops, small kids toys - all kinds of funny little things and carry them with her on our walks. Sometimes she would insist on carrying them for an hour and bring them home, sometimes she'd carry it for a few minutes and let it go. She literally had a pile of pincones near the front door of our building where she'd drop them before coming upstairs.

I'm now finding Jemma, my current female Pem, doing similar things. She brings home sticks and pincones and will carry a tennis balls for blocks if she finds one.

Rupert, my male will only put things in his mouth he is planning on swallowing as soon as possible and has never exhibited this behavior.

Anyone else who's dogs do this? I was wondering if it was a female trait that goes back to creating a comfy den?? Well decorated too.

Some of mine do. Lady used to, sometimes Morgan will. I think it depends on the dog. I don't see it as gender related. (Morgan is a male.)

Maya will do the exact same thing! Normally it is a leaf or stick...but when we are walking, she almost always has something hanging out of her mouth. Dudley, on the other hand, only puts things in his mouth that he can devour.

No - Abby is like Rupert. (and I am having a hard time trying to train her not to immediately swallow anything she considers tasty )

If something were in his mouth. he probably wouldn't be able to sniff every single inch of the planet. So carrying things in his mouth is out for Tucker.

Lulu will carry things for a little while.

Her favorite thing in the yard these days is to cross the bridge over the creek where I have a burn pile of sticks I pick up that have fallen in the yard. One day I was planning to actually burn them.

Lulu is taking the sticks one by one and and bringing them back into the yard.

LOL! So you'll have to gather them all up again to burn them. Couldn't help but chuckle!

Berry's brother Leo brings "presents" in the house to my sister whenever he comes into the house. Berry will from time to time, but her sister Scarlett usually brings a treasure in with her whenever she comes in.

And somehow I suspect you're not as thrilled with the "treasures" as they are.

Dillon picks up sticks and acorns and such but the intention is to eat them... he will pick up a ball or a bone in the house and take it up stairs to the bedroom when we are going up to bed but he doesnt pick stuff up on walks to carry... Gus doesnt either... I think that sounds like a cute trait!

I had two Pems (father and son) who use to grab huge tree branches from a windswept beach and run/walk them along the sand for many yards. Some of the branches I could not lift up myself. The older male Pem (Ricky) was the strongest, toughest Corgi I ever had. Corgis can have great object pulling powers. Sometimes these Corgis brought these big branches or pieces of wood over to me and expect me to throw it for a fetching game. I had to look for more suitable objects.

Yes, Molly does the same thing. When I take her to do her business, she has to carry a toy outside and carry it around in her mouth, then she brings it back inside. It is usually one of her stuffed animals.

The neighbor's dog...a fairly large basset...will take his bone outside to do his "duty" and bring it back in with him. They say that is the only time he touches his bone. He did take it out with Maya one day, and she took it from him! Don't mess with Maya May.
