Anyone here have other dog breeds? - 03-20-2007, 08:00 PM

The reason I'm asking is because I applied for another breed of dog and was turned down because I have a corgi and the person said the sire's owner had trouble with that breed and a corgi together before.

Any input? My girl is only a puppy, won't she get along with another puppy? I take her to socialize her with that breed of dog every week and others. I am taking her to obedience, puppy classes AND this week she starts confirmation classes. I'm glad I didn't sign the puppy I didn't get up for the classes the breeder was requiring me to put him in...

Any help/advice here would be good.... I am heartbroken and just don't understand...

Thanks IA.

Pam:

I am so sorry - may I ask what breed of puppy you were looking at? I don't have any advice to give you other then to keep looking for another reputable breeder that may not be biased against corgis.

No I dont have any other breeds, but I really hate to hear that. I think it's being breed biased. Jmho.

Hopefully others with different breeds can shed more light on this subject for you.

What kind of dog were you trying to get? I know there are quite a few people on here, including myself, who have other breeds. I have an 8-year old blonde cocker.

What breed was the other dog if you don't mind my asking. It may have been a breed which normally does not get along with other dogs and the owner was worried about that?

Off topic, but how old is your corgi and when do you plan on getting another puppy. Most people suggest that the best time to add another dog is when the first is around 2 years old (or old enough to be completely settled and grown), just something to think about

Whoops, I posted pretty much what everybody else just posted, lol.

Mollie is a Pomeranian/Poodle mix and I've never had trouble with her and my corgis.
Had another thought , were you trying to get a certain gender puppy?

I have a corgi and a border collie mix together, and Shippo (the corgi) has gotten along with dogs of all sizes, from chihuahuas to great danes. >o.o<

I have two corgi boys 1 year and 3 1/2 months (who are outlaws), a german shepherd/collie mix who is about 1 year old, a rottie mix who is 10 1/2 years old , and a corgi mix that is old and cranky about 14 years old. Also my son's jack russell/blue heeler mix comes to play quite often and they all get along fine although the 3 1/2 month old tries to be boss sometimes.

Breed biases do happen - right, wrong, justified or not. A bad experience with a breed can jade perceptions. IF I am understanding this correctly, the owner of the stud dog had a bad experience with her breed getting along with corgis. It happens.

Most likely, but they are going to grow up and as adults then that is when the problems might arise. Another possible thought is that you just have gotten a puppy in a breed new to you. You are just beginning things with her and the stud dog owner and breeder might want to see how you are going to follow through with your plans for her. It is hard enough to start out as a novice at square one in one breed and if you're plans for the second breed are similiar to what you want to do with Sophie; then they may see you as biting off a lot more than can you chew.

Another possibility and while it may seem far fetched, it is something that does happen. Temperament is very much inherited - lots of quirks, behaviors, likes and dislikes. IF the stud dog owners dogs don't like corgis, then it is possible that this could passed on to the puppy you get. It might be fine with Sophie as puppies, but when they are adults, the dislike might come out.

That is a good thing

It is hard to say exactly why without being a mind reader or having a crystal ball. I do know of a rescue group that will not place any of their corgi rescues with Jack Russells because of a bad incident.
