Between Zip and Zia's loud barking, you'd think we had some killer dogs in my house. Heck, they even startle me sometimes.

In the 1970s my corgi, Nutmeg, went camping with me. The VW was loaded with the tent, sleeping bag, ice chest and all of the other things needed. Nutmeg rode on top of the stack in the back seat. Once time in New Mexico we stopped at a mobile Border Patrol check point. Much to my surprise, as the officer approached, there was a rumble right behind my head. He chuckled and said, "You are lucky to be so well protected."

As others have said, our sweet loveable corgis can be wonderful guard dogs.

Talking Try walking past my house

I have 3 pembs and you would never think I have a smallish dog. They sound like shepherds or something nice & big. No one would come in my house with Yip, Yap & Pattiwack around---too noisy--great watchdogs. (that is not their real names, only the names I call them when they are noisy)

My pem, Zachary is not what you might think of as a "guard dog"; however, he takes very good care of me....whenever I am out of hearing distance, he will come and get me to tell me that: the oven timer is beeping; there is someone at the door, the cat is on the porch and wants to come in, the phone is ringing, etc. I find this very helpful. I once read that Corgis are used as guide dogs for the hearing impaired.

I love it! Hearing aids can be so expensive and hard to be comfortable. Great to hear about this capability of corgis.

Funny I see this thread. I was just reading a book my little girl brought home from school that tells of corgis being used for hearing aid dogs somewhere here in the US. Talked about the cost involved, showed pictures of training the dogs and such. VERY cute! Also showed a picture of hearing impared with their trained dogs.

That has to be heart breaking to do that for work and it must really take a special person to do. Spend all that time with the dog in training and give the dog away. OUCH.

Couldn't be a better breed, mine hears a crumb drop from 150 yards..

What amazes me with Zachary is that not only does he have excellent hearing; but the good sense to make sure I am aware of what he hears too. I do encourage him to do this and praise him when he does. I can see how Corgis can be easily trained to help the hearing impaired.
