I know better than to laugh at Cody's sitting down but it is also very Corgi like to be stubborn.
The "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Milan has a way of placing a collar, I suggest a fine chain training collar, just below the ears and keep the head held high like they do on the dog shows. I believe this way he will not be able to sit and then if he does give you some trouble you might give a sharp but gentle jerk on the leash.
I am probably not discribing this right but you will undoubtably get advice from experinced handlers.
At least some of his walk should be a controled exercize.

complaint is when I walk with him on a leash. Instead of him pulling the leash,
he will sit his butt down and not move - he has a stubborn streak and I would
love some advice on how to get him to walk better.

I have held treats out in front while moving and saying the words heel, etc,
but once he gets the treat, he is then distracted by other things. When he
sees people working in their yards, he loves to just stop and sit for awhile
and watch them. Now, I don't expect him to not enjoy the outdoors, afterall,
he is a puppy and there are lots of sights and sounds to see and explore, but what should be a 20 minute walk, turns into a 40 minute walk because he wants to stop so much and he just looks at me with this look on his face like
"I am not going to move"

Any advice would be appreciated. We just love him and he is otherwise a
wonderful friendly dog.

*~* Hello...
WHAT WORKED FOR ME...(I have 2.. 6 month old Pembroke sisters) is having someone else walk beside Midnight & Sunshine. My daughter was my best, "helper". I was the only one giving the command. I use a low soft tone of voice.

I would say, "Walk".

It took about 4 days for them both to get the hang of it. I had to gently nudge their bottoms...for the first initial start. But, they got it after awhile.

** Oh....I forgot !!! I worked with them FIRST......in our fenced in backyard. I would have my daughter, Sara, stand beside Midnight & Sunshine. I would say, "Walk...go for a walk" ? Midnight was the first one to start walking. Sunshine would just lay down in the grass ! ~~~silly puppy~~~ !!!

With having 2 puppies....I took advice from a friend to purchase a V-collar leash connector. It is a collar that is connect to each of the puppies neck collar which enables me to only use ONE LEASH !! Awesome invention ! No more tangled up leashes !

Anyhoo...WHAT WORKED FOR ME...is to start in my backyard. I also (like I mentioned) had a "helper" walk alongside the puppies. This only lasted about two days....because Sunshine learned that Midnight is moving...with or WITHOUT her. Otherwise...Sunshine would get dragged a little bit by the V-collar & leash !!

{ I hope this helps you }

-- Do you only have ONE puppy ?

BTW--(by the way...)...I NEVER rushed my girls on "their" walk !!! I do not mean to imply that you are....I just mean to say that I feel that when we take our puppies & doggies for a walk...it is HONESTLY "their" walk. Not ours !! I take time to let my girls, "smell the roses", pull me to people to say, "Hi" & also to accept COOKIES from the generous neighbor ladies !!

My walks usually last 30-45 minutes. I usually take Midnight & Sunshine for a walk TWICE a day. I just got a new part-time job. I MAKE IT A PRIORITY...to spend time with my girls and still take them for "their" walk...even if it is only now down to ONCE a day.

My daughter, Sara, gets home from school around 3:15PM...and she has been taking them for a walk...by herself.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, I just have one puppy - really can't get another
one because we also have 3 cats and two teenagers and they all keep me
very busy. I have tried what you said in the back yard and as soon as he
sees some leaves flying around, he will go to catch one and lay his little
silly self down to chew on it. He just has such a stubborn streak - he will
just sit or sometimes lay down right in the road and won't budge. I really
don't rush him. I let him sniff and enjoy the sounds, but I think he has to
know that he should listen to me when I say it is time to walk.

I enjoy him immensely, but this is his one thing that I can't seem to get him
to do - of course, when he sees kids playing ahead, he tries to barrel down
the street to get to them, but once the "fun things" are out of sight, he
gets stubborn again. Ha

When Taylor was a puppy and right up to the age of 18 months, he would often lie down on the footpath and refuse to move. This was after some considerable walking in relationship to his age, so I would pick him up and carry him for a couple of hundred yards, then place him down again and conclude the walk. He was simply telling me he has had enough walking and wanted a break. He doesn't do this now apart from: 1/ when members of my family disperse while out in public places, then he will lie down and refuse to move. This is his responsibilities and protectionism and herding ideas coming into play. So I usually pick him up and carry him for a few yards and tell him that it is a forlong thing he is doing and it won't get him anywhere; 2/ when we are doing agility and he gets tired/bored from hurdling etc, he will lie down and refrain from moving until I either pick him up or right him up and have a good conversation with him. I think it's lovely and adds to the relationship I have with Taylor.

Thanks for the info on Taylor. I wish I could say that Cody decides to park
his butt down after we have walked for a bit, but usually it is right as we
try to get going. He gets all excited when I tell him we are going for a walk,
but almost as soon as we get going in the street, he decides to stop. He
always has to stop and watch what is going on. He especially loves to stop
and watch construction workers building houses - also people raking their
yards and anyone doing anything outside. He will just sit down and watch
for about 10 seconds and then I tell him it is time to go again and he will
walk until the next thing comes up. Sometimes, it is for no reason at all, he
just decides to stop and either sit or lay down in the road and does not want
to move. He is adorable to say the least, but I wish I could resolve this.

Hi Linda.
How gorgeous...but! This calls for action. When you set out of your house with Cody, have your running gear on, and jog him for say 10 minutes. Give him positives but if he stops and plants himself down, say a firm NO and give him a firm yank with the lead and then if he gets up and goes, throw him a treat and continue on. Several days of this, and when you take him out for a walk instead of a run, he'll be very compliant and happy for a stroll at normal pace where he can still see the sights and hear the sounds. Cody needs up to a hour a day of walking/running as an adult so he must get into the groove.

puppy walking

okay, I am going to try the jogging first and I will throw the treat ahead of
him when he walks, rather than just giving it to him in a sit
position. I will let you know how it works.

Indeed, only give him the little treat when he co-operates ie gets back up to continue onwards/ does what you ask or signal.

Red face

Very funny T-Gal with how Chloe behaves. That is just how my Cody behaves - lay down and not move - walk some more steps and the same thing, or just sit his butt down. He will lay down and look at me like "I am
not going to move".

I have tried, upon recommendation, to start out with a slow jog and he seems
to want to then run and be a little more cooperative; but I have a long way
to go with him in regards to getting him to cooperate.

I use a very lightweight chocker chain on the end of a slim lead. Never used a collar for years which is a shame because I have been given some nice ones.
I would say that your problem with walking Chloe and her not co-operating is most likely the harness. I don't think they are suitable for Corgis and I believe that the lighter and less obtrusive is the guiding implement, the better.

Corgis can easily get into bad habits and not realise what is best for them but they also need to feel comfortable and at ease. A harness is probably too restricting for them.

I used a harness for Abby because she was terrified of the leash on collar, even so, she would still baulk, constantly do the flop, become ten tons in weight and refuse to budge, much to the great amusement of passersby and my total despair - No, no she's not tired, we're just having a Stop Walk Meeting,ha ha.

I started using two leashes, one slightly longer attached to the collar, and the other to the harness. This led to some improvement. Once she became used to this, I put a lighter, tighter adjustable collar on her just for walking, still using the two leashes, and gradually removing the harness leash for longer periods of the walk until she was walking on collar leash only.

She now walks really well and only does the flop occasionally (when she says she needs a rest). Her permanent collar is the lighter tighter one, and she only wears the harness in the car.

Hi Corgimom
Forget slow jogging - it's probably slower than fast walking! Get into a good jogging speed that will have your Corgi running. Townie Corgis ( as opposed to farm working Corgis) can run steadily for, say, 20 minutes - but 10 minutes at a time is enough. Keep it up. The opposite is not happening is it - even with what you have been doing up til now.

I just need to get back into shape Michael - He definitely will move if I start
to run, but if I try a fast walk - forget it, he will stop, walk, stop, lay down,
etc. etc. I just don't want the "treats" to be a bribe and he is going to expect
them all the time to get him to walk better.
