When you say sugar free does that mean sugar substitute free? I read somewhere that dogs don't handle the sugar substitutes because they can't digest it.

That isn't a problem in my house because it is sugar, molasses, honey, or natural fruit, none of the imitation chemicals.

Merrie
Merrie,

Absolutely, will shoot you my recipe via PM tomorrow morning.

Sugar free means "Splenda". Unfortunately, my Aunt who had surgery this last Monday can no have sugar. She is super-diabetic, and our family is pretty insulin resistant, so I am very careful with any sugar intake. As the ice cream was for her, I made it with Splenda. Splenda has been the best "frankenfood" that I could find that was an easy 1:1 ratio and tasted okay.

For the cats, I will put organic Nancy's Vanilla or Plain Yogurt in and spin it for a cool summer treat. The sugar-free substitute is for human consumption only and will cause you to have the runs if you imbibe too much. GREAT for cutting back on sugar, because you can't "cheat" with franken-sugar. If you do, you pay!!!

A local bar has "Yappy Hour" where you can bring your dogs out on the patio and sip some beer... the owner also provides doggy ice cream. I haven't gone but I've heard its awesome. I will have to take Bernie to Yappy Hour someday

She snuck a Dorito from me the other night, but we've never tried ice cream.

I buy the little 1/2 cup single servings of vanilla ice cream, and Foxy gets to lick the top and the empty cup when I'm done. Her eyes go as big as saucers when she sees you take one of those out of the freezer! She's never had a "problem" develop out of eating that small amount of ice cream.

We also made homemade ice cream once and let her try that, but that was much more ice cream (and much richer) than normal, and it gave her some issues later on...

Jackie has never had human ice cream - I make her her own (search above on "frosty paws" to find recipe). If she did have ice cream, I am positive she would have the same result as her cousin Dillon. She has the same sensitive tummy.

Do any of you give your doggies an ice cube to play with? I've found that Gromit LOVES to play with ice out of our ice dispenser. He eats it too. Its not something we do very often, but my kids get a kick out of watching him scoot it around the kitchen.

As for artificial sweeteners, I recently switched to Stevia which comes from a leaf in Parguay. It's all natural and tastes great. You can get it in drops or in packets from Wal-Mart. The packets have fiber added...4 packets is equal to the fiber in one bowl of cereal. Its kind of expensive, but I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners, they make me bloat and make my joints and head ache. Just thought I'd share...

Our local ice cream store (she actually sells Wisconsin frozen custard) also makes "puppy pops" which are yogurt and pumpkin--she also sells really lovely cookies for humans and squirrel shaped cookies for dogs. Owen is always up for a walk down to the Dairy Godmother!

My two have only been allowed to lick the bowl when I have eaten ice cream. I would be afraid to give Rhys his own scoop!

They do get the homemade or store-bought "Frosty Paws," though.
