I have 2 side by side holes about 10 inches deep in my side yard.
Why? Who knows. Lulu started a hole so Tucker, not to be out done, decides to dig his own hole about a foot away. I caught them in the act and in the following week, they periodically deepened them. Nenevr did catch them in the act so I assume one kept watch while the other worked on his/her hole. Now that the snow has melted, I can't believe how big they were! (the holes, not the dogs...). I need to have some siol brought in for flower beds so will fill them in and over seed. Hey! Crocuses are up! Hope they don't dig those up!

We were taught by a neighbor to not ever have Pepper see us gardening as a puppy. It worked she never digged. We didn't want the doxie behavior of digging under a fence.
Then we got a home and it had gophers in the yard and she hunted. Of course the gopher was miles away by the time she dug down the 8-12 inches to their run. Hmm she probably loved the move here because vole runs were 3 inches down. Anyways, I encouraged this because she found the runs on both sides for me to put the two traps down. If I dug with her, she would snap at the shovel, it was HER hole. She got so if she saw me with a shovel or the traps, she'd get all excited. I had to drag her into the house to set the traps. A 2x8 board on top with a rock kept every critter away. She was so excited to smell the dead critter in the bag. Yes, I did encourage that digging. If I needed a hole dug for a tree, I'd tell her "get the gopher" and she'd help. Otherwise she never dug. Her last year we had to stop her completely as she would get too much dirt up her nose and be too weak after such aggressive digging. By the way in the mild climate of San Diego, a gopher could have 3 litters a year. Not good for gardening. The voles don't seem to have as large a litter here. The ground squirrels, heck we counted 6 or more last year, chirpping. The bobcat loved our yard during that spring. We love the golden mantle squirrels, they live alone and are rare, just so people don't think I hate all rodents. June is a great time for us to get a puppy, all planting done by April! Merrie |

Well Sassy will dig, mainly if she is outside and gets bored cause we cannot come to play at her beck and call. She does several 3 or 4 inches deep wherever she chooses, but so far (knock on wood) she has not bothered by rose bed. She also does fluffypants "victory dance" and is quite proud of herself for doing it also.

Mazie was a digger last summer - I am kind of hoping she has forgotten the feeling of dirt between her toes, but seeing that she digs at the carpet in the house - I think it is a lost cause.
She also likes to tear out large clumps of grass and toss them around. I like the fact that she can entertain herself, but the yard takes a beating! Lisa |

![]() The pics of Zia & Bernie are too cute - those faces are irresistible!!! And, of course, tales of Tuck & Lulu never disappoint! Those two are priceless. I can just see one keeping watch while the other digs. - Jessica (who is starting to think she should have licensed the "Victory Dance", because she could be raking in some royalty payments now! )

Some dogs are natural born diggers, I think. My Mom and Dad had a Border Collie when I was little and she aerated the yard quite often. To get her to stop was about like trying to nail Jello to a tree...it just never happened.

OOPS! I guess I should take that back about Duncan not being a digger. I forgot about under the deck step and under a yucca plant. He digs a little of the dirt out and then lays down in it during the summer heat. He likes that nice, cool feel the fresh dirt has. Of course, he gets a good brushing afterwards to freshen his coat.
