Zachary may have been showing a little fear aggression due to being in such close quarters in a store or he could also have been showing a little possessive aggression if it was in the food or treat aisle. You may want to do some internet research on the types of aggressions and see if that will help you understand why he was behaving that way and what you can do to help him understand he doesn't need to do it.
Yes, they can sense our anxiety and mood, but they also have inherent and learned responses to things just like us.

I like the part about possesive aggression in the food or treat isle because that is where we were both times it happened. Thanks!

My Zack (Ch Truly Sundasher Exacta Am. Can UD, JH, WCX, VCX) was a tippy-toes, tense body posture, lift-his-lip-at-other-males guy. Unfortunately, when he was young and I was stupid and another dog tossed him during an obedience class and I could never break him of the male defensiveness. He was gentle and kind to puppies, female dogs, male dogs he trusted, other animals, all people. So, yes, avoid an altercation at all costs. Possibly set up "meetings" with dogs you trust to desensitize the issue. Set a trained limit - its not okay to growl or bite, but you can silently lift a lip or move away.
My 2 cents on Cesar is pretty much a bravo. He is not a trainer he is a mental health intervention for these dogs. Many of his methods are similar to the Koehler Method from 30-40 years ago. It's tough. But for some dogs he's the last stop before the needle. I hesitate to draw parallels between people and dogs, but it's very similar to rehabilitation of juvenile offenders - highly trained people must do things to some youths that I would never think of doing to my kids - but they have to do what works to try to save their lives. My "word" is "Ehhhh". It would freeze my poor toddler with his hand halfway to the cookie jar. Poor kid! |

I love hearing all these different "words" we use! Just a little noise to say I SEE YOU . . . and sometimes, that's all it takes! I don't want to hijack this thread, but . . . when I was a teacher, I could silence the room by clearing my throat . . . Oh The Power . . .

Lol at the no-no words! I do the "uh-uh" thing when she is being naughty or provocative. If she doesn't obey a command, I seldom repeat it, but say "What did I tell you?" or "What did I say?" and she immediately does it. Magic, really.

What the Caesar does works for him. How much of what he teaches really lasts is hard to say. I know that many pet owners don't follow up on what they learn or maintain the new training. They don't do follow up shows so hard to say how many are really retrained and maintain that. And I'm sure it takes much longer than the half hour or hour that the shows show you. Dog training is not that easy. If it were many of us would have perfect dogs! Quote:
