Sleeps with eyes open
Just wondering if anyone else's corgi sleeps with their eyes open. Dudley seems to be doing this more and more lately. It's kind of creepy because he will be snoring away and you can wave your hands in front of him and he just keeps sleeping. Is it something I should worry about? I tried to google it but didn't find much to go on. I will try again when I have more time.

Interesting Jeni! Jackie doesn't do it . . but my Dad does!
Good luck with your google search, and I hope that someone will have something more intelligent to say than I did!

I haven't been able to find anything on it at all. The best that I could find is that greyhounds supposedly sleep with their eyes open as do hamsters...but nothing about corgis. I'm going to do a little test tonight because I think it might have to do with the position he lays in. We've only ever noticed his eyes open when he sleeps with his head propped up against the headboard of the bed. He doesn't do it, I don't think, when he is laying flat. HMMMMMM experiments, experiments.
You might have something with the dry eye theory though. Poor Dudley's eyes are always red.

Actually Jeni, I've noticed that Lowgan does that too! How long does Dudley keep his eyes open when he sleeps? The whole time? Lowgan will have his eyes open for a short time, maybe 5 minutes, and he is still snoring at the same time. I wondered if that was natural too.

From time to time, most of the corgis here will all sleep with their eyes open or partially open.
Dry is something different. I have one with dry eye and she sleeps with her eyes closed. Debbie |

I have never had a Corgi or seen one who sleeps with their eyes open. It has never occurred to me. But a few humans can sleep walk - which is walking around with eyes open but actually asleep) and it maybe this is the kind of thing which a few dogs can achieve except they are not in motion. I have a son who several times walked in his sleep when he was much younger.

Well, I experimented with my poor Dudley last night, and it really seems to be the position he is in that determines if his eyes are open or not. They are only open when he lays on our headboard with his head propped up and to the side, like I had suggested above. Still don't know why this is, but at least I know he's not a weirdo all the time

Jeni - about the red eyes - have you tried putting drops in them? I have the eye drops from Drs. F&S, and have started putting them in Jackie's eyes daily . . . they have really reduced the size and "grodiness" (apologies for the 80's valley girl-ism) of her eye boogers! Maybe that might help Dud's redness? Just a thought.

He doesn't really get eye boogers...except when he wakes up from sleeping, and even then they're not too bad. He just always has red eyes--more so when he is sleepy.

Both of my corgis sometimes sleep with their eyes open, partially or fully open. I, too, have waved my hand in front of them thinking they're just resting, but no, full sleep. I wouldn't consider it a problem.
