Dudley had a great recall--until we got Maya. Now, he is off the leash and gone before I can blink...normally to the first muddy hole he can find. He's so much more gutsy since we got her and she just follows in tow. So, no more off leash for Dudley until we really get recall down!

Well Chip doesn't go off leash either because I am afraid. Now Dale, he is able to go off leash. I wish you all could see him strut his stuff, he walks like a sumu (sp) wrestler. His strut is unbelievable. Anyway, Chip played the great escape. Recalling tonight in his own fenced in backyard perfectly. I do love that Pawsitively Perfect Chip & Dale. Cindy - we will have to get together for steaks whenever that T Gal goes to work on her property.

wicca was pretty horrible around the 6month mark- in fact she still has a bit of SYD syndrome. Especially when I want her to do something she doesn't think is in her best interest. I work a ton on recalls with her...Some fun games that you can do to proof your recall are below.
these should all be done on a long line so that he is succesful. once he has a high rate of success you can drop the line, then a shorter line, then a lighter line, then no line. Wicca is on no line now for these games....and she is 3 and has been doing them since she was a puppy!!! up the ante- start by throwing a bunch of cookies around the yard- little pieces of something boring. let him get super interested. Run backwards a few steps and say his name. As soon as he looks up Yes! What a good boy. He should come running to you for a reward. You can jackpot him the first time (a few quick rewards one after another) Again let him get involved in sniffing or whatever- say his name- followed by come or here as soon as he heads for you yes! what a good boy. Do this a few million times over a peroid of a few weeks- all different places different distractions. Then make it harder- Bring two or three varying levels of reward. biscuits, rollover, hotdog, chicken. steak whatever. Reward with less value item for slower response. The next step is to make it even harder- you are only going to reward for fast and immediate! Use the highest value reward for the best recall! Nothing but praise for mediocre. Another game I do with wicca alot is working on her self control- which is really hard for her. I will have her sitting beside me leave her in a stay and put out in the yard four or five of her favorite things. Some toys some food. I will release her to go get it. Let her get one thing and call her. Make sure that you have a hold of the line- don't let him self reward. If he doesn't come right away wait it out. The minute he looks away from what he wants Yes! Good Boy and offer up some high value cookies. You can make this game as difficult as you need to. Start with lower value distractions on the ground so he is succesful. The next thing is again only rewarding for coming immediately and quickly- so he is RUNNING AWAY from what he wants to get to you! Sometimes (1/3 times) I will reward Wicca with an OKAY! (release) and she can go pick up all the yummy food..... Hope these will give you an idea of how to proof a recall. -amanda

I made a huge mistake with Zip when he was a puppy. He liked to run down the sidewalk (can say that Zip will stay out of the street) to one of my friend's house to play with her chihuahua (the one with the hedgehog -- some of you know that inside joke). Anyway, I'd just follow him and stay and visit with my friend. Huge mistake! It took me forever to break him of that. If I can't get him to come when I call him, I will ask him, "Do you want a treat?" and he turns and hooks it back to me. Zia comes back each and every time you call her.

Will a corgi really come when you call no matter what?
I remember using the "want a cookie" and that worked unless she saw someone who gave her cookies. Then there was the calling to the neighbor's dog so she came running to me out of jealousy. But the big scare was at night when she was bolted, I heard her growl like a male got too close sniffing and I called her in the very panic voice and she came running from the side yard with her heart beating so hard. Thank God the coyote wanted sex before dinner as I could have lost her that night. She was on a leash after that at all times. And it wasn't the 10 feet coyote could grab distance, I kept it shorter.
