Recall
I took Chip & Dale down to my daughter's on Sunday to play with her new puppy. When my grandson opened the front door, out they went. Well Dale stayed on the front porch, but Chip got a wild hair and started running around. I called him to come and he just looked at me and started across the road to where a boxer mix was chained up and barking. We ended up chasing and circling him until he went back to the house but it scared me to death. Anyway, he knows to come and is the first one to respond in obedience class so I am practicing with him in the yard and I am going to try to do 15 minutes a night and change locations in the yard when I call him. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution to it.

Have you tried locations other than your home for practicing recalls? At a park on a lead, with other distractions etc? (I'm sure you have, but it's the only suggestion I can think of!) Do you always use the same treats or can you try something more appetizing for when you are around distractions? I am glad to hear he didn't get away and everyone is okay!! Good luck with your sweetie.

I give Chip T bone, ribeye, prime rib, chicken you name it he has eaten it. I have done recall at the park, on a small island on the lake, in the driveway on a 20 ft leash and tonight I am playing hide and go seek and going out every little while and calling come and the three come running for cube steak mostly on one call and they don't even know where I am in this big yard. I am going to practice practice practice every night and off and on during the weekend. Obedience class, he won out over even GS size dogs on getting to me first.

Funny you said that - The owner for the company where I work and some employees always say if they could come back they would want to be my dog and yes you may - I can always fit another corgi in my home.

You made me laugh - I can just picture that and I bet your neighbors think you are insane. Normally if I squat down and hold out my hand Chip will come or call cookie cookie also that didn't work either. He thought it was a catch me if you can game and unfortunately there was that big dog My daughter later told me that the dog loves other dogs but hates people so I would have gotten bit. We have been playing the come game tonight in the yard and he is doing perfect but I must say that Dale is doing perfect also and surprisingly so is Maybelle. It has got to be the steak. LOL

Rupert also responds to the magic "COOKIE, COOKIE" - also, if I say in the saddest voice possible "Bye bye puppy" and turn away he runs to me as if to say don't leave me Mom!!!
I also have whistle trained mine to recall in places where they are further away from me - the whistle equals food - which equals Rupe high nubbing it back to me with the goofy sister in tow. You are doing the best thing T-Gal - practice outside of the usual pace they go for training and the long lead as Barbara suggested is excellent. Deb |

This is what would make me paranoid about letting one off leash. That video of Rupert and Jemma on the golf course I liked so well, Deb, scared me to death. I kept thinking, "Does she know they'll really come back? What if one of them sees something and decides to pursue?" I guess the only place I'd feel comfortable taking them off leash would be in a fenced in yard. The beach or mountains-I'd be horrified if I lost one.

There's not too many places at the golf course to worry about Cocolt - it backs onto people's backyards. When I even get remotely close to the road where I park my car - they get leashed up quickly. This is a good breed to go off leash and learn. Being herding dogs, they seem to have an inate ability to keep checking on me where I am - if fact Riley drove me crazy when she was off-leash - I couldn't get her to run more than 30 feet away from me.
Believe me I am a paranoid Mom - I am very careful about where they go off leash.

I lost a beautiful Samoyed years ago and I guess that still bothers me today...she just bolted and that was the last I saw of her. I was just 24, but; I still couldn't catch her. Could she evermore move!!
