Raisins toxic to dogs
I was visiting a website where they were telling about a dog that was poisoned by raisins. I didn't know that raisins were poisonous to dogs! So are grapes! Just 7 raisins or grapes can make a dog very ill. It really freaked me out because I fed Gromit a raisin the other day. I didn't give him anymore than that because he has food allergies. I'm so glad that I didn't.
Still, my daughters leave little boxes of raisins on the end table in our living room where Gromit could easily get to them. I'm going to go straight home and educate my family on this new discovery. This website had a pretty good listing of other items that are harmful to dogs in case you are interested. Very sad story about the raisins - its about halfway down the page. Hope this link works: Education

Thank you for the caution. There has been a lot of discussion on this subject. If you search back in the archives you will find other lists that you can cross check.
Before we found out about raisins and grapes our family would toss Duchess grapes. Luckily she never had any ill effects. A raisin once in a while probably won't hurt a dog either but better safe than sorry. Thanks again for the link. I am sure you will be educating many who have not heard of the various food products that are bad for dogs. |

I was aware of most of the food listed but was surprised to see Azalea (entire rhododendron family) and Morning Glories listed. Even some common weeds can cause problems I've heard. Since Corgis and most other dogs, will eat about anything, you have to survey the yard as well as the kitchen for things that could cause big trouble.

Great list - I knew about the raisins and onions, and of course chocolate...mushrooms is a new one for me, though.

I had no idea! We used to feed our springer spaniel raisins as treats every now and again. We called them bugs. She knew exactly what they were. I hate I was feeding her poison. Oops! Crap I am a bad person!!!!

In New Zealand, sultanas are more used than are raisins because they are recommended for deserts/puddings/cakes/biscuits. Sultanas are a type of raisin with a slightly different taste and they are of course from the grape.
Even a small amount of grapes etc can kill a dog yet some dogs are inadvertently fed these things and some other dogs 'raid' the grapes and the grape leaves in the garden and show no short term affect. |
