Now there are some very fancy hotels that do have kennels and charge for that. I belive the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley (Park City area) has a kennel for their guests. Then again they also have gold plated fixtures on the sinks and tubs. Way above my budget!!! Peggy

Also, they don't see the need to change minds. They're not lacking for customers so there's no need to change. In fact if anything more of the hotels/motels are getting less pet friendly. More and more often we find a no pets policy. That's just the way it is in the US. Pets are not welcome many places. Not in malls, most stores (other than pet stores), hotels/motels and most certinally not in resturants. Peggy

The same trend is happening here. We spend quite a bit of time in campgrounds and the number that say "No" to a dog, even a small, well behaved corg, is increasing. Sometimes, the individual camps don't even have a choice if the local Council says that it has a no dogs in camps policy. And I can understand it, too. Just a week ago, we were in a camp where there was a "yes to dogs" policy and a visiting dog attacked the camp managers dog. We left when the future of the manager's dog was still uncertain, so bad were his injuries. Unfortunately, a few people simply don't take responsibility for their animals and end up punishing the rest of us who do. But isn't that the way the world has always worked?

Bringfido.com and I think there is another site that focuses on travelling with dogs.
BTW,... when you sign up on bringfido.com there is a link to have them send you free stuff. They sent this little pack of 4 postcards. One of the postcards has a BH Tri Pem standing on a surfboard. The dog looks very much like Tucker. I have the postcard on my fridge! SOmeone asked way back about taking the dogs with me to the Nationals. I understand if dogs are not participating they should not be brought in. So I will respect that. I am planning to send in an entry to have Tucker run in the Agility Trial. I have the postmark date on my calendar and I understand the application will be ready in a few weeks. Don't know if we will get in but I am going to give it a shot. Why not? It sounds like they rarely have this event on the east coast!

Big events often make the world of difference to hotels etc bending their rules. For instance, the NZ national dog show (also incorporating obedience, agility etc was held last year in a mid island city called Palmerston North. Many of the hotels motels, apartemnts etc opened their doors to accommodating dogs in one way or another.

The Cardigan National Specialty had it's host hotel change ownership this year. The new owners' policy had a no dog policy and did not/would not honor the contract the former owners had with the CWCCA - show site was lost. This was a contract signed at least two years out. The National incoporates everything the NZ national dog show does and more, sometimes tracking. Herding also is a part of the National and it is held off site at appropriate facilities, but the exhibitors sometimes do stay at the host hotel or at least spend money in the restaurant and/or bar when visiting fellow fanciers. The hotels make a nice chunk of change, but it evidently didn't matter to the new owners. A new hotel was found and the show will go on.

Debbie - it is perhaps another good reason to think that we have something going for us in NZ, More and more hotels are owned offshore in NZ and some of those might carry the policies of their foreign owners. But I hope this flexibility reamins in NZ and the great majority of accom venues are in local hands where rules are made to suit the occasion. There are plenty of towns and cities in NZ where the hoteliers and moteriers etc chase the dollar especially in the off-seasons. We have a thriving tourist industy here which is growing every year ( 20% increase each year for the last dozen years with visitors from the USA - and that is one of the smallest increases in tourist traffic). So it is not that our accom verues are empty.
It is a shame about the loss of one of the sponsors of your Cardigan show. Our national show also includes tiralling - which incorporates tracking. Gee if we only could have a Corgi fixture here which included more recreational/sports events than just conformation shiowing, wouldn't it be lovely. To see Corgis in action on several planks would be a Corgi lovers paradise. |
