Is your Corgi a food thief?
I can leave my plate of food right next to Ruby and leave the room and she will not touch it. We on occasion leave kitchen garbage bags out and she will not go through the garbage. She only eats when food is presented to her. If I put her food bowl down and say stay, she will not touch the food until I say OK. A real solid citizen in that respect-she is a champion beggar though. Is your food safe-do we have any canine thieves amongst us??

I've been lucky about Duncan and the garbage can. I wish I could say the same about food if it's in nose or tongue reach. He will wait until you leave the room to snatch something. And heaven forbid, if my husband drops a potato chip between the couch cushions and doesn't know about it. He goes after the smallest crumb

Tucker is a garbage disposal. He will eat anything. If we leave the garbage out he will put it all over the place looking for goodies. He eats rabbit poop when we walk, yuk! Good thing he's not much of a kisser!

Both of our corgs have been very trustworth with food that they know is not their own. People food, other dog's food, the cats foos are all off-limits and they knew/know it. I could leave Mouse alone on the front seat of the car with my open lunch packet beside her and she would not touch it. In fact, we were once at a bbq and she was tied to the clothesline. We went for a bit of a chat with my bro, and when we returned, she was surrounded by a circle of offerings from other bbq attendees. All well within reach, all left completely alone. Rose is good, too, but I think that would tempt her too much!

If I placed a plate with scrummy food in it on the floor and told Taylor to leave it. He would. If I dropped food on the floor and told Taylor to leave it . He would. If I placed a plate of food on the floor and said nothing, he would know it is for him. He doesn't go into the rubbish to take food scraps. If I left food on a coffee table or the dining table, Taylor would know it is not meant for him and leave it alone(as a pup, food on a table would have been fair game). You can train a dog to basically eat when you want him/her to eat.

Cardiguy,
Funny you should mention this because Zachary is the same way as Ruby is when it comes to food. Even when we go to the pet store where they always offer him a treat, he will not eat it, I save it for him and he will eat it later when we are home. He will not even eat it in the car. Another thing he does sometimes when I give him a treat, he will take the treat and hide it for later. By the way, I just looked at your pictures of Ruby.....she is beautiful! Zachary's Mom |

Cindy, when she first came, would have taken from my plate if it was on the coffee table, but she wouldn't now. She does however love her food and you never know, given half a chance....Sooty is not so obsessed with food.
In fact when I first had him I used to have to feed him with a spoon to make him eat as he would never eat otherwise. He would have gone for days without eating. Going to the kennels the first time cured him of that. And Cindy arriving made sure he now eats straight away- he used to leave some food for later- now he daren't as it wouldn't be there later.

Since the floor is Mazie's domain, anything that may hit it is hers (in her mind!). But she has never gone through any garbage - that is too much work - especially when all she has to do is look at Daddy with her big, brown eyes and ears straight up...he is such a sucker

Laura _ I had a Pem Corgi whom I had to spoon feed too. He didn't mature physically until he was three years old and another Corgi entered his life which forced the competitive spirit within him including meal times. Mind you, he might have preferred the meals I give my current Pem to what what on the menu in those days.

Reba, the 13 year old, will eat her food and any other food within reaching distance. Jesse, the 1 year old, doesn't know he's a corgi yet and sometimes isn't interested in eatting at all. Sometimes I have to put veggies in it or sit next to him while he eats to get him to eat. Different personalities.

Libbby is not a thief but she is a vacum cleaner. She likes to go around where all the other dogs eat and clean up what they drop out of the bowls. Sometimes she hides food under the food bowl in the kitchen so she will have somthing to eat latter.

When Taylor visits rest homes, retirement villages, hospitals etc he likes to search for food first thing before alligning himself to residents, patients and staff.
