Another question for you guys - PWC Coats!

As far as I know, all Pembrokes have medium-length coats. However, just from browsing through the photo gallery, I noticed some smooth-coated Corgis in there. Are these Corgis shaved to their undercoat (grooming), or are some bred differently with difference length coats (genetics)?

Personally, I'm partial to their full length coat because they look beautiful with it! But then again you get the fun of dog hair everywhere

Medium is a relative term. There is no such thing as a "smooth-coated" corgi. There can be close coated, sometimes described as a working coat. There are open coats (a fault) which look more puffy. Show coats are a little more plush usually. Length of hair tho' is pretty much consistent from one coat type to the next. (I have a variety of coat types around here.) Another factor is the amount of undercoat a dog is carrying. Then there are also the darling fluffies, which can vary in length. All this is basically genetics, grooming can be a minute part of it.

Some do shave down their corgis but I'm not sure there are any pictures of those. And trust me, I can certainly vouch that close coated corgis can put out as much hair as any other type. Fluffies can be at the bottom of the shedders as they often have less undercoat than do normal coated corgis.

I guess what threw me off were Corgis like this picture:

http://www.gocorgi.com/gallery/showi...&orderby=views

Isn't that a bit shorter than usual? Maybe it's just the way the picture looks. It just seems the puppies always look like they have longer fur than adults.

Here's kind of the length I have seen Corgis with (and yes I know this is a show dog that is linked, but the Corgis I've seen have had coats closer to this length than the short one above):

Maybe if I want a nice furry pet, I should get a fluffy

That is an example of a close coated/older style/working coat - and they shed just as much as any other kind.

Puppy coat is different than adult coat. It is softer, color not as clear, and overall fuzzier looking. Adult coat will be a little coarser in texture.

A lot of that one is due to grooming. Length of the hair will be pretty close to the same as the closer coated one. Texture on the show dog will more than likely be softer and a little more open than the closer coated one.

Cheetah's Shippo is a fluffy.

Oh, another type coat than can occur is what is called a "glamour coat" - usually a bit longer than it should be and softer in texture.

Oh No!!!!

Just looking at those shaved Corgsters makes me sure that i DONT want to have anything of the sort done to Colby...i'll just keep him in the A/C so he doesnt get too hot!!!

and after seeing Shippos photos and a few others, fluffies are fabulous when they grow out and we are so glad we have one!!!

Colby is the Coolest Corgi!!!!

Caselogic - I must be going blind, but that Corgi in the photo looks to me like the typical Corgi coat-wise. I cannot for the life of me see anything resembling a short haired coat.

Bonnie - thanks for the tip. I was looking at the 'nice' pic on display and did not see that it was to the link that we were being directed.

I have seen a lot of Corgis like this - rather short coated but not a particularly faulty coat. Generally speaking, Corgis bred through generations in climates which are warm in winters and hot in summers, develop short coats or shorter coats than is the norm. Thus a lot of Australian Corgis from the warmer climates of Australia can be coated as described. The colder the climate, the richer the coat. I am not a great fan of the short to medium coats.

My girl is doing some wierd stuff.. She's young, only almost 8 months. She goes through stages. She has had the 'normal' looking coat most of the time but, she's going through her first heat an her fur looks 'short' to me right now. I swear her hair is littlerally exploding out of her right now! Not to mention it's getting warm outside as well so, I'm getting double duty on the shedding... I love my dyson! hehehe I think she's also going through that gangley teen age look about her. She needs to do some filling out before she'll look 'normal' to me again for a corgi.

Dale is 5 months old and he is going through a gangly stage - if a corgi can look gangly. when Chip was neutered, they shaved his pants and he still hasn't grown it completely back. I would never shave a corgi either. You are welcome Michael.

Abby is Australian, from many generations on Father's side born in our sub-tropical climate - however her Great Grandfather on Mother's side is Eng.Ch.Blaizewood Crackerjack of Kilvewood imported from the UK.

She has a very thick coat - I do not know if this is part fluffy, but one of the advantages of our very mild winters is that Abby's coat does not appear to change with the seasons. She has the same amount of shedding throughout the year.
