mismarked?....

i really do hate the internet lol....today some stranger saw some pics of Odie, my 8 month old baby boy, online and told me he's doesn't meet AKC breed standard, he's "mismarked", and he's way to large....he weighs 20.5 lbs...after seeing this i went to the AKC website & re-read the standard but i am easily lost & its the mismarked thing that confused me most....so i guess could someone just tell me what is mismarked on him using the real names of body parts...thanks a bunch

PS..these are the pics they saw..thanks

Nonsense. Odie is not in any way mismarked according to the standard. My personal preference is for a red and white Pem with almost as much allowable white as possible and Odie certainly is not blessed with a great deal of white but his white is all in the right places. At eight months and 20 pounds he is not overweight. I am very hard on overweight Corgis. A Corgi puppy (up to 12 months ) should be a little chubby but they can easily be fined down in their junior stages. Most Corgis should be under 30 pounds and the rest who are the overly big structured Corgis coming in at under 35 pounds.
Innterestingly on another new thread on Go Corgi we have a five-seven week old Pem Pup and her white markings on her head are very much like Odie.
My four year old Taylor is a little above a medium size Pem male and he weights in at 26 pounds.
Odie is a lovely looking fellow. Congratulations.

It's amazing how many people don't read the standards on weight. I was actually at the vet yesterday with Shippo, and one of the staff was like "Wow, you are a BIG corgi!" I had to explain to her that he's 27 lbs, so matches the standards just fine. He's not even tall either. He's exactly 12 inches at the shoulder. I guess many people think corgis should be more like pocket dogs, but that's not right. >^^;<

So yeah, that person was wrong.

Yep your anonymous "advisor" is totally in error, he is not a mismark at all. And so what IF he was? You aren't doing conformation with him, so what is the deal? White ears, drop ears, the quirks outside the preferred markings in the standard often give corgis an extra edge of character - like Shippo.
Fluffies to the eye, especially untrained ones, do tend to appear larger. Corgis are great optical illusionist when it comes to accurately determining size and even weight sometimes. Unless one gets their hands on a dog, then it is extremely hard to definitively say if one is too big or not.

They probably said he was "mismarked" because the white on his nose is only on one side. The great thing about the internet is that everyone is an expert about everything when they know they're safely hidden behind their screen names.
But like everyone else says, why would it even matter if he was mismarked? He would still be your sweet baby.
You should go back to whatever forum that was and tell that guy to mind his own business. What kind of jerk would just send you unsolicited criticism of your dog anyway??

I've had similar issues with people telling me "Your dog is too fat!" In fact, that was the first comment I got from a friend's mother - in German - which she thought I didn't understand! "What a fat little dog!"
It just blows me away that people can be so opinionated about something they know nothing about, in real life, as well as on the interwebs.

BTW, hottpixie - Odie looks to be a lovely, intelligent dog.

I am not concerned with the faults Duchess has as to the standard. I actually would like someone to point out her faults. They are invisible to me. She seems perfect.
But, to have someone blurt out that Odie is "mismarked" would be disturbing to you, hottpixie5. It must have been unnerving coming as it did. Odie is handsome and uniquely marked.
It is wrong of some one to tell you that you shouldn't care about that. No one can tell you how to feel. They just meant that given that you are not breeding Odie, it doesn't matter. Or it wouldn't have mattered.
You see all our experts agree. There is no doubt he meets the standards for color. ( I may have misspoken! Are you planning on breeding him?)

I have had just the opposite issues with my corgi. Everyone I meet seems to think Oliver is smaller than average. He weighs between 32 + 34 lbs and he was the largest puppy in a litter of nine. To me he is actually bigger than what I thought he would be. Big or small I love him dearly. In fact today he just passed the therapy dog test. I am so proud of all his hard work.

Please keep Oliver's weight down to show ring level or at least, pretty close to it. That way he will enjoy life much better and should live longer and healthier. Obesity is the most common health condition in dogs. The scary part is most dog owners do not know their dogs are overweight. Even a few pounds is a dangerous thing especially if the dog is a small breed.

Is Oliver obese though? He could be just fine, As long as he feels fit when she runs her hands up and down him. He could just be a tad oversized.

It's hard to tell without relevant pictures at least and it is hard to tell from the use of words. If a person says that a Corgi is smaller than average - does that mean smaller in stature or smaller in weight. Then again, those not in the know but have a mental picture of a Corgi may have an image of a typical overweight Corgi so that Oliver looks underdone by comparison when it reality he too is more weighty that he should be. If 30 percent of all domestic dogs are overweight, it is more like 50 percent of all Corgis.

Oh yes, the mismarks. Joni has a 1.5 inch white patch right above her tail that looks like a little flag. I think this is what the standard means as a mismark?
