Conflicts in the question of origin
I have a silly question that I can't seem to find the answer to. It has to do wit the origin of the Cardigan Corgi. I have heard conflicting stories. One story I heard read said the Cardigan was created by breeding a border collie wiht a pembroke. Another explanation that I read was a cardigan was the result of breeding a border collie with a daschund. My intuition tells me that the first story is more believable however since both origins were published I just don't know. If anybody knows I would love to be let in on the secret!

No one really knows but from my information it was the breeding of the long low tekel type dogs with the local red heelers of the day. I can't put my finger on the book where I got the best information from but the CWCCA has a good article at : History of Cardigans and even better is this article on the Kennebec site - Helen's grandmother was the most influential person in establishing cardigans in the US. Cardigans descend from a Teckel family background, the same family to which Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, etc. belong. They are not the result of crossing a Doxie with a Border Collie. There are some posts in the archives I've done with more detailed information. Hubbard and Lloyd-Thomas, breed historians, favor independent development of the two corgi breeds. In addition to the sites Cindy gave, you can find more history information at Cardigan Welsh Corgi info
And hey I learned something. I always thought Mrs. Boles was Helen's mum. ![]() Debbie |

I was always a little confused too but Helen's site says grandmother so that's what I'm going with!
Actually if anyone ever gets the chance, Helen and Bob are a wonderful wealth of information on the breed. But make sure to give yourself lots of time - Bob loves to chat. Cindy and the crew |

I adhere to those who say that Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis are cousins (ie related). But if you know anything about the Border Collie breed, you would never even begin to associate them with a Corgi.
