Question about Foods

Hey everyone!

Hope everyone had a great long weekend!

Cooper is amazingly awesome and he reminds me so much of my first Siberian Husky.. who was the love of my life. I am so so so impressed with this puppy!

Anyways, I had a few questions for everyone!

What's everyone feeding their Corgis?/

At the moment I have Cooper on Wellness Puppy which he likes a lot.. and Hemi I just recently Switched to Canidae Turkey .. with the canned Canidae added in (2 spoonfulls) as he's a bit on the skinny side .. 23.4lbs 2 wks ago. He's put one a little weight so I'm just monitoring his intake on food. So far so good. We're all very active so I'm not worried about him becoming over weight.. this dog is so picky as well when it comes to food. He loves Canidae so far though!

But it seems ever since Hemi's been on Canidae he's been pooing a lot more.

I've heard from others that Merrick was a great brand.. Any one feed Merrick? If I could get some feed back on it that'd be great

Thanks everyone!!

All the foods you've mentioned are excellent brands. It may be the Canidae is a bit rich for Hemi or he could still be adjusting to it. Give it about a month and see how his system adapts.

We tried Science Diet Puppy and then Solid Gold Puppy. Charlie was so picky and I didn't think he was gaining enough weight. He didn't seem much interested in food. When he wolfed down the next door neighbors' dog food while we were visiting, I switched him to their brand, Pedigree. I'm not too thrilled with the ingredients, as compared to the premium brands, but heck he likes it. He's eating and putting on some weight finally.

I've done a little bit of everything. Right now we have one rescue on Diamond Premium Adult-it's the only thing that doesn't give him the runs. Many of the crew are on Pro Plan Chicken and Rice-great coats, good weight but two of the dogs get really red saliva stains on around their mouth so we have them on the Selects-Salmon. Let's see 12 week old pups are on Pro Plan C&R, while the blue bear is on Eagle Holistic-Chicken and Rice. I really like what that has done for Eddie and am thinking of switching a few more of the dogs to that.

As far as weight on a dog, be patient. Some bloodlines remain skinny till they mature which could be upwards of 2-3 years old. I had a dog that was that way-his daughter is just 2 and finally filling out. So don't push the weight, it may come in time. I usually add a raw egg or some fresh chuck to a diet when I am trying to add weight. The eggs-once or twice a week are perfect.

I have got a year supply of Pro Plan as a prize - I have decided to take six month supply of ProPlan Performance (chicken and rice) and six months supply of ProPlan adult normal (lamb and rice) so I can alternate where necessary, Both are AAFCO-approved. They should last around two years with the supplements that I add to Taylor's meals.

New Zealand has just started to market a NZ-produced dry food called K9 Natural - it does not carry the AAFCO-approval. It should also be available overseas in the near future.

we are feeding Peanut Eukanuba puppy food and he loves it. before we got him, the breeder was feeding him Diamond puppy food and that gave him alot of gas. luckily the transition from diamond to eukanuba went smoothly!

Don't think Diamond sells here but Eukanuba is a biggie - not AAFCO approved but close to being complete and balanced. I give Taylor a large Eukanuba biscuit daily.

Not every dog will do the same on each food. Their bodies are all different, just like ours. I also feed Canidae to both my dogs, and they do wonderfully on it. Both are at ideal weights, have soft, shiny coats, poop just twice a day, etc.

I feed the Pro Plan lamb and rice. Fish is a fatty so I have to watch him but boots is growing so fast it just burns right off him. I think it is the chicken chasing he is doing that burns it off.

Precise Foundation Formula is Tucker's food. Kind of expensive, but worth every penny during the recent toxic dogfood scare.

Sure, and if they didn't, I'd feed them each a different food without complaint lol...

my corgis are 4.5 years old and both of them are on Hill's science diet, beef flavored dry, 1 cup a day. My Mocha is slim and fit, but my vienna still has a little love handle.

As a reminder, AAFCO does NOT approve foods, they set the minimal nutritional requirements.

Having issued the reminder PSA, I will beg to differ with the "approval" statement. According to two Eukanuba products I have here and directly from the bags and I quote:

"Iams Chunk Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for Maintenance."

"Eukanuba Medium Breed Adult Natural Lamb & Rice Formula Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages."

The IAMS was a gift by the hosts of a Dog Fest we had a rescue booth in on Sunday and has a big seal stating "Vet Recommended" upon it. The Eukanuba Natural came in with our latest foster dog.

Debbie persists in playing with words. AAFCO has set minimum standards (and maximum standards where applicable) for dog food that is presented to them. Around 38 vitamins, minerals and nutrients constitute the AAFCO requirements. If a presented food content meets AAFCO standards, then they will give permission for that particular food content to have the AAFCO 'stamp of approval' vis AAFCO-tested and more importantly AAFCO-passed. Of course it is words that effectively mean passed, approved etc that are the key.
If the manufacturers of Eukanuba and others wish to play around with words like Debbie is doing, then let the buyer beware. Anyone is capable of asking AAFCO if Eukanuba or any other dog food meets their tested standards.

This might be interesting: the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Club is entered in the Wellington street Xmas parade on November 18 and our sponsor is the Masterpet Company who are the importers and distributors of Eukanuba. So it is possible that all the human participants will have t-shirts with Eukanuba emblazoned on them and the Corgis with an Eukanuba bandana.
