Hi
So Maxwell is 14. It's a good age for a Corgi to reach. A great age is fifteen and sixteen. Beyond that it reaches out to the marvellous and amazing categories that are seldom attained by any breed of dog.

My last Corgi, Hadlee was a little over a month away from his 15th birthday when he passed away and my previous fellow was a little under 14.

There is no doubt that dogs are living longer today due to better care, food, attention and medical advancements.

At 14 has Maxwell got his full faculties ie sight, hearing and movement? Is he still keenly interested in exercise and running around playfully? The thing that seldom ever goes in veteren dogs is their smelling powers - and that's very important for dogs.

I'm piecing together some material for a story on the longest lived dog ever in New Zealand. There was an unconfirmed report that a Pem Corgi had lived in NZ til he was 26 or 28 and a daughter of his lived to 22. But I have lost my contact for this story at present. Another piece of information I am following up is about a Pomeranian who lived til she was 26 and the same owner had a Border Collie who lived til he was 23. But these are all incredible an almost unbelievable achievements. The world's oldest dog that ever lived died at 28 and there are one or two others who reached 27. So these NZ dogs, if valid, are among the world's most aged ever.

Going back to Maxwell, Corgis are a long lived dog and you would normally expect them to live aged 13 to 15. The smaller breeds are usually the ones who live to a greater age than the bigger breeds and the largest breeds lifespan can be as short as 8-10 years. Most farm working dogs don't live past 10-12 years due to their busy working careers. Having said that I recently wrote a story of a 14 year old farm dog who saved her injured master by running a couple of miles for help.

Some people change the diets of their dogs when they reach unexpected old ages in putting them onto a vegetarian programme and they give them more specialised forms of exercising eg water-resistant walking.

Finally, don't forget it's quality of life that is important in aged dogs.

Getting my dog, Duchess at age 7 years old, I was concerned too about how long I could expect to have her. But I realize I could have gotten a puppy who is not gauranteed to live to old age. In fact there are no gaurantees for our own longevetity. May you be blessed with many more years with Maxwell.
