finally got him!

After what seems like forever, we finally brought little Dudley home today. Poor guy was so car sick, but he's doing much better now two hours later. Turns out he is much lighter than in the picture, and actually a brown brindle, which I think is actually pretty neat. I'll try getting some pictures when I can.
He is such an onery little guy. In the car, he was quiet and never made a sound, but as soon as we got him into the house, he was a different dog--barking at us if we left the room and being very talkative. I definitely do not need to use the leash bonding method on this guy. He is stuck to me like glue and climbs in my lap at any chance. As I type, he is laying at the bottom of my feet.
Of course, I apparently stink at potty training because he has already gone twice in the house. It's just so unpredictable! He was running after my husband one second and as he ran, stopped to urinate in the middle of my living room floor! And the rewarding with treats or kibble isn't working at the moment because I think his stomach is still too upset to eat anything. So, I've just been lavishing him with praise when he does go outside. Hope this is the right thing to do!
Anyways, just thought I would share my enthusiasm with all the corgi lovers here

Jeni,

Congratulations on bringing Dudley home - he is very cute. Yes, the first
day can be hectic - I remember.

Now the potty training begins. They will often "piddle" during play - just stop
and go. You have to keep a CONSTANT eye on him - always; so that you
can catch him if he starts to go - the best is to take him out frequently and
always reward and praise him when he is "going outside" and tell him "good potty" as he is doing his duty.

Have fun and good luck.

Hi Jeni - congrats. Just take him outside shortly after every meal and immediately after any fairly active play and after any lengthy nap. The newspaper system inside a non carpeted room is also a good idea for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice guys. He woke up from a fairly long nap and whined at me (I think more so I would notice him then because he had to go to the bathroom) so I immediately took him out. He did what he was supposed to, came in, and went right back to sleep. I think the little guy is definitely worn out from his long car ride here. I have caught him in the act both times he has gone in the house but by the time I got him outside, he no longer needed to go. I'm just going to have to be lots more careful!

Also, how long should I wait before I become concerned that he is not eating? I know today is probably because his stomach is still upset from being carsick, but when do you think he will start eating again?

Thanks again for the help!

Jeni,

How long of a car ride was it for him and exactly how long has it been since
he last ate? If he is not feeling better by tomorrow, I would call the breeder
to see if his stomach was upset before you picked him up.

You say his tummy is upset - is he vomiting at all, or is it that he just doesn't
want to eat anything you are giving him? Did you get instructions from the
breeder on what and when to feed him and did she send home some of his
food with you?

My one dog used to get car sick and ask your vet home much because of the size but dogs can actually have dramamine. We had to give it to Tinker for about 6 months for any car rides. Even 5 minute ones. After 6 months she was fine and 5 years later can do long trips without a problem. I know that is not a question you asked but thought I would add that in. I am in potty training tormoil too but we didn't have much of a schedule the last few weeks. My husband was home on R&R leave from Iraq so we were all over but he has gone back so we are starting a schedule now. Pockets goes to the door but you have about a second and he makes no noise when he goes there. If you are not there he goes into the hallway and we do this run to the door trying not to get peed on. He is really good at not pooing in the house though. We are only having a pee issue. He is even peeing in his kennel at night. I am starting tomorrow with an alarm going off every couple hours until we can build up for the night. Longer note then I meant! Sorry!!

Hi Pocketmom

We have gone through the same thing with Chip so I sympathize. Although he didn't go in his crate or on the bed at night. He is doing alot better now but he doesn't make any noise either. I am thinking about training him to use a bell. He is almost 4 months old.

Pockets Mom,

You mentioned that Pockets is going pee in his crate? I can't remember, exactly how old is ? I am wondering if you are putting a water dish in his crate, if so, he really does not need one at night time.

Cody usually goes in his crate between 10 - 10:30 for the night,(and I take him outside at this time for his last outing); so he usually gets his last drink around 8:30 or 9 p.m. at night(and this is just a smaller drink) and we make sure at this time, that we do not get him all excited with running or playing which would make him want to drink more - it is just usually quiet time for all of us. We have basically kept this routine since we got him at 11 weeks and he has never went pee in his crate.

Maybe Pockets is drinking water way to late into the evening which is causing him to pee in his crate

Linda

Problem solved with the food issue!
I took him outside for another potty break and he greedily ate up the treat, so I brought him in and gave him some food and he ate with no problems whatsoever. Thanks guys!

I'd say definitely worn out from the long car ride home and an element of stress being in his new home. You're doing well on adjusting to having to watch him in the housetraining department. Cut yourself some slack <VBG>, you haven't been home with him for a whole day yet at this point. It is an adjustment for you having to watch him, learn to read his body language and signals and it sounds like you are "getting with the program" quite adeptly.

IF he isn't eating in the morning, call the breeder. This kind of thing, don't ask us - call your breeder. We're okay for advice, but sometimes problems are of such a nature the lag time between posting a message and getting an answer on an internet forum can be extremely critical and you might not have it to waste. IF he is off his food at breakfast, I'd be concerned.

Couple of tips: For carsickness - feeding a gingersnap cookie (yep - those that usually come in plain brown bags at the grocery store) can help settle tummies - both human and dogs. Ginger helps with nausea.

Pedialyte and Ensure are two good things to keep on hand. Pedialyte helps should dehydration be a concern. Ensure is good to provide nutrition in a bland type meal.

Pocketsmom - A Corgi does not want to foul his bed or his kennel/crate. So something is amiss with the management of your Corgi. It is a desperate act by the Corgi and it generally means he/she is getting liquids at the wrong time or been forced into a kennel/crate at the wrong time.

Well, we made it through the night with no potty mishaps whatsoever. He's not at all fond of his crate, but I'm sure he'll get used to that with time. He's eating now with no problems so I'm just chalking the fact that he didn't eat yesterday to his throwing up multiple times in the car (poor guy, I know what it's like to be carsick). Thanks again for all your help and I'm sure I'll need lots of new advice as time goes on.

Michael,
His trip took about 7 and a half hours in not so great weather which I'm sure didn't help him any. This was the first time he had ever been in a car.
