USA by Motor bike

THis has little to do with Corgis but I think it might be of interest especially since I know the main star.

Gareth Morgan and his wife and a couple of others are at present travelling through the USA on their own motor bikes which had been shipped all the way from Wellington, NZ to Florida.

Gareth is going to cover 22,000 kilometres by biking through the backblocks of America- from Mexico to the Rockies, from Santa Fe to Alaska using metal roads only. He's on an adventure which discovers frontiersmen, rugged individualists, taking in religion (eg Armish), civil rights, rock & roll, blues, country music, hillbillies etc.

Gareth is from my home city of Wellington and he made headlines very recently in giving away all of his 47 million dollars to charities - laregly to real needy situations outside of NZ. Only last year Gareth and his wife and others went on a Genghis Khan trail taking in such places as Iran and Mongolia also on their motor bikes and Gareth has written a book on those experiences.

Gareth is an economist and a financial advisor. He has helped make one of his sons a multi multi millionaire. But money means little to Gareth in the sense that he doesn't need millions. He says money and wealth are not his point for living. I know Gareth from my days as CEO of a Chamber of Commerce.

I hope he didn't give away all of his money as you said, as you do need some money to do things that you want to do (lol) Just curious what are "metal roads"? Now to bring things on topic-does Gareth own a corgi, and if not, why not?

Cardiguy - about three years ago, Gareth helped one of his young sons start up a business on the internet called Trade Me - it's an equivalent of E-Bay. Trade Me was sold in March of this year to an Australian based media firm whose CEO is a New Zealander and who owns almost every metropolitan and Sunday newspapers in NZ, for some $200 million. Gareth's share was $47 million so he has given all of it away to worthy causes. He's not a pauper by any means but the point is he sees more to life than money, A lot of people who own Corgis and take extra good care of them are just like Gareth - it's not for the money they acquire a Corgi a shower him/her with love and affection and time and energy. There are better things in life that money. Ask Gareth if you see his group as they travel around the backblocks of the USA.
Metal roads must not be a USA term. It means unsealed roads such as loose stone chips

Michael, thanks for the explanation of "metal roads". In the US we refer to roads that have loose chips as simply unpaved roads or maybe gravel roads. The saying goes that the best things in life are free, but unfortunately for the rest of the things (including Corgis) you need some money. Money does buy you one of the most important things that life has to offer and that is independence. Its the independence that your buddy has that allows him to ship bikes across the world and travel the US for an extended period. So don't discount the importance of money.

Oh I know the importance of dollars and cents but Gareth is a little like Mother Teresa in that he has given away to the needy a huge bulk of his possessions and that his travelling plans of the last year or two have involved in seeking out truth and to experience history as well as wanting to participate in adventure. The more of us who are in a position to give generously to help the poor and oppressed without resortiing to violent means, the better for mankind.

Sounds like Gareth is really a unique individual and society probably needs more like him. While there are plenty of poor people in the US I wonder if there are really any oppressed people in this country.

I would imagine that there are still plenty of racial tensions and disparities in the USA. There was a lot of controversy regarding the recent hurricane ravished areas in the USA and the amount of assistance given when most needed and the race and economic background aspects of a lot of the population that were affected.

Gareth himself will be commenting on these types of subjects.

By the way, Gareth Morgan has a relationship to Corgis afterall - Gareth is a Welsh name.
