microchipping
The NZ Government is under pressure to drop the introduction of compulsory microchipping of all dogs born from July, 2006.
It's one of the measures that has been taken following a dog mauling of a child some two years ago. But there seems no reason why microchipping will prevent any further dog attacks on people in the future. Think about it. Dogs are registered now with local councils and high fees are paid. These things will still remain even if microchipping takes place with its own billing from vets - vets stand to gain many millions of dollars from this. The people who avoid registering dogs will avoid microchipping as well. Microchipping is simply a form of idenifying dogs - name, breed, ownership etc So a bad owner and a dog with a personality problem is not going to disappear from microchipping. The NZ Kennel Club, the SPCA and the Vets Association all support microchipping of dogs. but it's our farming community that's now leading the charge against this yet to be confirmed law. They can't see why they have to spend $100 on each of their dogs when the dogs are confined to working on farms. I don't see any neccesity for Taylor to be microchipped either. And frankly, I don't really see any need for him to be registered . The only dogs that need controlling are the dangerous breeds and dogs with a known dangerous reputation or through a proven incidence of causing concern. Same for the owners - only much more so. It's bad owners who should be locked up etc not their dogs. What do you think? Last edited by Michael Romanos; 05-02-2006 at 09:17 PM. |

Both my girls are microchipped and i will have Pockets also. My situation is different in the fact that we move a lot due to myhubby's job and we had gone to Europe and with the plane ride and everything. Also I know some countries in Europe already have the law that microchipping is required. I do it by choice because of my living circumstances and I don't think it is right to make people do it. And you are right the same people will avoid doing it.

Here is a link to an article:

Animal ID system raises Orwellian concerns for some Written by Jedd Kettler Microchipping, as an OWNER'S choice for identification purpose in case a pet gets lost, I am fully supportive of. To legally require it, I am totally opposed. The can of worms this opens up is extremely frightening. Debbie |
