Names - 01-19-2008, 01:00 AM

I decided on "Lady Waeryn" for her registered name and that gave me an idea that I really like...In a couple of years I plan on getting another Corgi (When I'm renting a better place, or have my own house with my own fenced in yard), probably a male next time. Since Waeryn is "Lady Waeryn" I started thinking that it would be cute for my male to be "Sir____." It will be quite a while in the future but it is fun to make a list anyway. Also, I see myself having more than 2 dogs, so maybe they'll all be "Lady___" or "Sir___"

Anyway, the point of this post is for people to come up with names fitting of Knights and their Ladies, I just thought it would be something fun to do and would also give me some ideas. Here are some of my ideas so far.

Sir Gareth (Gare-ith)- He was a Knight of the Round Table, and was also Welsh, so that seemed quite fitting.

Lady Isabella (Bella or Belle for short)

Sir William (Billy)

I would love to give them all Welsh names, but when I look up Welsh names it's hard for me to know how to pronounce them. I would love Welsh suggestions especially if you could tell me how they're pronounced.

Are you using the breeder's kennel name in her registered name?

No, I wasn't planning on it.

Why not? Is that not a term of the contract?

Seriously, it is a sign of respect and way of honoring the breeder who brought Waeryn into the world and made it possible for you to even have her. To not use it is something of a slight to him/her.

She said she was very proud of the way that this litter turned out, but I don't think it matters to her that I don't
use it.

But still, it would be a very nice way of saying thank you to her for Waeryn. And yes most Breeders do ask their kennel names be used.

This is an interesting angle. In New Zealand, it is the breeder who registers a recognised pure bred litter or members of the litter with the NZ Kennel Club so that the new owner (buyer) has no say in the matter of the registered name(title) of their dog. It matters between little and zero because all dogs get a name that is termed a 'pet' name and it of course can be as obscure from the registered name as possible.

Stephen,

I am on topic. I am expressing the point of view of a Breeder. Time, a lot of thought and planning and often goes into selecting just the right dog to breed one of my girl's to. Then there is the nurturing and special care that goes into the dam for 63 days before the litter is even born. Then there is the whelping which might include a c-section. There is a lot of sleepless nights spent in that first week sitting beside the whelping box to make sure all the puppies are okay.
There's the socialization, lots of cleaning, shots, more socialization, more cleaning all going into making Waeryn just the right puppy for Whitney. So call me dense, but I don't quite understand why given all the breeder put into Waeryn to make sure she was healthy, sound and well adjusted, why the slight to the breeder by not using his/her kennel name. It is just a thank you.
Kennel name's Lady Waeryn, it's that simple.

Canada has the same registration system Michael speaks of in NZ. More and more Breeders in the US are beginning the same practice, even though not required by AKC. They are registering the entire litter themselves and doing the registered names. Another method Breeders here are doing is filling out the registration slips with the new owners when the puppies are picked up and sending the registration slips in themselves. These methods cover several things; 1) they know their kennel name is being used; 2) they know the puppies will be registered 3) they know the puppies will be registered with the correct registration - open or limited.

And Michael is spot on about the call/pet names - they don't have to have anything do with the registered name.

Most of my puppies go home with a registered name already attached. I have theme litters as it helps me to keep track of the "kids" better, but the owners have the right to rename their call names if they want. I have had an Iowa litter-with names of famous Iowa things, a country hits litter, cliche litter and the latest-the Alcohol litter.

Currently we have a large variety of names, usually it's more so human names then fun ones. Then again, I have a Moose, Shoot'r, and a Click at home right now. Then there's a Fred, Eddie, Albert and Marg. They have names that really fit their personalities.

Actually lots of people use the sir and lady theme within their kennel. It's very common.

I haven't gotten Taffy registered yet, she came with her name so I have got to figure out what I want to register her as that Taffy will fit into. I could have changed her name with my breeders blessing but Taffy already knew it and it fits her although I would like to add some spice too it.

This is what I do and have done for several litters now. I too use themes, decide what my puppies reg. names will be and give them "call names" as I like to call them by name while they are with me.

The new owners can change the call names if they want but the registered names cannot be changed.

Other breeders will ask or request you use the kennel prefix. Some will make it part of thier contract that you use the kennel prefix.[/quote]

Both of our dogs came with their kennel prefix...and colby was named vodka at the time we got him as the litter was alcohol themed....so hes registered as coltsrun colby and the new puppy while she didnt have a name before we got her, she will have the prefix of triple h and whatever her name turns out to be...the breeder said she stopped naming the pups as every one with a name, she ends up keeping!!! shes up to 25!!
