DNA - Question for Debbie - 01-25-2008, 03:32 PM

Debbie

I am curious as to the reason for dna testing on male dogs that have up to 7 litters in their lifetime. How is it used and what is the purpose. Does the AKC send a letter upon registry of the litters?

I also may register Taffy as Bonnie's Taffy too Little for lack of anything else. so thanks for that idea.

The FUS program came out back in 2000 around the time of High Volume Breeder's Committee. It is a way of protecting the integrity of the stud book. IF a stud sires more than 3 litters in one year or 7 litters in its lifetime then for the litter to eligible for AKC registration a DNA profile must be on file with AKC. It is a way being able to make sure the sire is who the breeder says it was. Some Breeders also use the DNA profile as a way of identification.
