Outside Corgis - 01-27-2008, 09:58 PM

Somebody I know has come to me asking if it's acceptable to get a corgi and keep it outside 100% of the time in Texas heat (apparently, his still lives with his parents and it's their idea to keep the dog outside). Now I have told him what I think of this already. I am 100% against it. In this day and age, I don't believe there's a good excuse to keep any dog outside. I can't understand wanting to get a dog and then isolate it from me by putting it outside. I want my dogs with me in the house. They are my companions.

Anyway, I am posting this to get others' opinions on the matter. Do you think it's acceptable to make a corgi live outside, away from its owners?

Why get a dog if it's going to stay outside? Especially a corgi? I wouldn't get any dog and keep it outside.
But thats my opinion

Corgis are not regarded as been happily disposed towards being an outside only pet/compamion. Some breeders with many Corgis probably resort some of their dogs to living outside but that is a different matter to the owner of single, double or triple Corgi/s.
Corgis and almost every other breed of dog just love being part of the family/owner and that means the run of the property and house.

I don't think that I could leave my corgi outside all the time, he's a very social animal and a member of the family. I am opposed to getting a dog and then leaving it in a kennel, they need socialization around dogs and people to be well adjusted.

Charlie is with me, inside and outside together, almost 24 hours a day. I think he's happier, and I know I am.

I do know people here in Texas though who keep their dogs outside 24 hours a day. A few of them go out about every hour or two and play fetch, take their dog out for daily walks, obedience train, get good vet care, etc and the dogs seem healthy and well adjusted. (I think they'd be even better as indoor/outdoor dogs, but that's just me.) The dogs have plenty of shade, quality food, water, and a good dog house. These folks do love and take care of their dogs. It's just their "old school" thought that animals belong outdoors.

Unfortunately I have met too many people whose dogs live outside, and they seem to almost have forgotten they have a dog. The dogs still have food, water, shade, but not much stimulation or interaction with their owners. Those dogs seem either depressed or hyper (probably both) and their humans should not have gotten a dog in the first place. These dogs are merely surviving, not thriving...not much of a life.

I would discourage anyone from leaving their dog out 24/7, but there are a few responsible owners who do it.

When I was growing up, we almost always had a dog/cat/fish, or some combination of the three. My mom always made sure we had animals to take care of. When my mom got re-married, my step-dad was of the "old school" thought and always made our dogs stay outside (unless we could sneak them in).
In my opinion, as a pack animal, dogs should be with their people as much as they can. They are part of your family, they should take part in your family activities! If you aren't willing to share your life (instead of just your time) with your pets, why should they be willing to share theirs with you?
But that's just my opinion.

I don't think you'll find anyone on the forum who will say, "Sure, throw the dog in the yard. It'll be fine." You might ask the person (I take it teenager, or preteen) that if he gets a dog and puts it in the yard, and the dog had the free will to run away from home and go somewhere it could live inside with a family, would it? Hopefully he'll make the right decision, and wait until he has his own place. (I'm sure you already told him that.)

We know what our dogs would choose if they had a voice.

Why ask this as a question when the answer is obviously no for any dog and doubly so with a cold weather dog.

By asking this a person could say "It's not just me that feels this way about..." I'm glad people ask questions like this and a host of other things about corgis because a person that wanted an answer quick could run a search of the group and come to a conclusion.

Exactly. This was my point. I don't see the problem with asking a question to prove a point either.
