I teach Taylor few tricks. But there are things he does on request that could be quite unusual. He sometimes shakes his body from uncertainty at places he is not comfortable to be at first, and I tell him not to shake and he stops doing it. From two hundred yards away, I can ask him to stop, sit and stay. I tell him to go and have a drink in the stream including the one that runs through our property, and he does. He enjoys a ride in a wheelchair and on a scateboard and I just call out "chair" and he jumps on these wheelie things. There are other things......... but if your Corgi knows and understands a lot now just think what he will know and understand in years to come.

Duchess astounds me with what she has been taught. Some one in her previous life, Before me, has spent considerable time schooling her.
Being ignorant as I am to obedience training, I don't know the extent or how to use her abilities. I just see it come out at various times.
She is a mystery, not knowing the exact circumstances of her owner giving her up. I know it must have been painful to the owner to leave this loving animal, even knowing that she was going to be well placed by her breeder.
The only thing I want to do is curb a few bad habits, I don't want her senior years to be taken by teaching her tricks, or even strict obedience. Not that training is a bad thing. I don't have the temperment for it, and Duchess does not need it.

*~* tricks.. - 02-05-2008, 09:37 AM

*~* Midnight & Sunshine know alot of tricks.

What I am working on know is to have them walk without a leash and to walk beside me....not ahead. They are doing great at this new command. Sunshine is more disiplined and patient than Midnight...so, she receives more treats for her good behavior. Midnight is heavier than Sunshine and is alot slower to move.

This is not a trick....but, something that I am extremely PROUD OF: both Midnight & Sunshine will let me trim their claws and also FILE THEM DOWN !
I started this when they were first brought home. I sit criss~cross on the floor with one of them in my lap (while the sister watches) and I simply
say, "Lemme see.....lemme see". I I gently take their front paw and touch it.
I started touching them FIRST. I did not even attemp to cut any nail for the first few weeks. It was just the COMMAND. They would both wiggle for the first week and then, they got used to it. I would do this about 4 times/a/day for about 2 weeks. Then, I showed them the clippers on the third week. EVENTUALLY, they let me cut their claws and slowly agreed to let me file them down as well. Many of may friends and family members are JEALOUS of this !! I have no idea why !

When my wife and I picked up Nick the Breeder mentioned to us that corgis are "puppy whiz kids" and she certainly was right. It is amazing how quick corgis learn tricks and retain them.

Duncan's main trick is to get his kong and drop it constantly in front of you to put peanut butter in it. Then when he is told no, he'll pick it up and go to the other person and try and convince them he just has to have some peanut butter in his kong. Also, he has to carry it to the kitchen himself to have us fill it. The other day, my husband was filling his kong, and he brought in the old bone we use for Chloe (she hates the kong...go figure) for hers to be filled also. Now that is a very considerate brother! Probably the only time he'll do that, because we've tried to prompt him to get hers a couple of times since then. No luck....YET!

The best trick I taught was with my last corgi and it was to play roll the ball. It started because I made the mistake of playing with him by blowing air at him when I was dryer my hair during the day. He thought this fun and should be played EVERY time I broke out the dryer. This is not a good thing at 4:30 am...especially when you live in a condo! To keep him from barking at it, I would roll his ball to him with my foot, while I dried my hair and he would lie down and roll it back with his nose. This back and forth would go on until I finished. I'm trying to teach this to Pip (without the dryer!), but he's not as interested and his aim is a little off.
