Unneutered Male Dog - 02-05-2008, 05:43 PM

I am just curious as to people's thoughts on how a male corgi's personality is if he is used for stud. From what I have observed, it changes their personality and they tend to have a one track mind especially if a female dog is around. I have also seen where they continually mark their territory and fight with other male dogs more and they don't make nearly as nice of a family pet.

The personality doesn't really change. And no mine don't have one track minds all the time. They do get distracted easily when we have a female in season. Thier hearing can become very selective!

They are harder to housebreak and tend to forget they are housebroken when a female comes in season.

And they are more aggressive with other males. Especially when there is a female in season. Some will also whine or howl when crated or away from the female. (Such as in the middle of the night!!!!)

They are fine with female dogs when that female isn't in season. It's when one is in season they tend to lose thier minds. Testosterone overload....

Yes, I advise that if you are not showing and going to be a responsible breeder then you should spay or neuter your dogs. It does make life so much easier.

I've had intact boys that were best pals until a girl came in season and it was all over then. Both had been used at stud.

In addition to all the things Peggy said, they can also loose manners and try to mount humans - inappropriate humping.

Some of them will get to be wanderers. IF there is a female in season anywhere nearby, they'll take off and try to go find her so you have a problem with a roaming dog bothering neighbors.

From what Peggy and Debbie have suggested, there is a difference between personality and behavior. Unneutered dogs can certainly exhibit all the undesireable behaviors you mentioned, and still have wonderfully sweet, happy personalities.

I'm waiting to have Charlie neutered until 12-14 months because of a desire to do athletics, and research suggesting that agility, flyball, and other "sports" dogs may suffer fewer bone and muscle problems by neutering after one year. However (BIG however) he started marking everything about a month ago, and I'm just counting the days (months) to have him neutered. I also think the extra testosterone spikes are causing a bigger problem with his teenage attention span, making training more difficult right now. But his personality is still sweet, happy, funny Charlie.
